Gary Hall Sr. is an American swimmer, three-time Olympic medalist, and former world record-holder in five events. He is known as Senior in that his son Gary Hall Jr, also swam in three Olympics, combined; the father - son team swam in more Olympiads that anyone in the world. After swimming, Gary went to medical school and then on to a wonderful practice of medicine; He practiced as an Ophthalmologist at the Gary Hall Eye Surgery Institute and treated patients with Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration and Cataracts. Besides his distinguished career in medicine and in competitive swimming, Gary is constantly giving back to the community. He has always shown a gracious willingness to help others in and out of the pool. He started the organization: The Race Club; to help people overcome challenges and reach their full potential in life. He uses swimming as a vehicle for teaching character, self-esteem and life skill enhancement. His book is a wonderful and deep reflection of his career, his motivation to make us all better and to express a great love of family. His chapters describe in elegant fashion, the meaning of win and the meaning of loss; and how we navigate both arenas. Gary Hall has given us a great read; and great insight into a true champion – in and outside of sport.
