Publisher's summary

The first two limbs of the eight-fold path of yoga sutras - the basic text for classical yoga - are examined in this spiritual guide to the practice of yoga. Foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of living that free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action.

The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas - a Sanskrit word that translates to "restraints" - and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, nonexcess, and nonpossessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances - purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender.

Life changing!

I’ve never paused an audiobook so much to write down quotes. So many things to realize and think about and process. I bought the paper copy too so I could reread and think about again and again.

YES! To this book!!!

I absolutely loved this book. The ancient wisdom of the Yamas and Niyamas paired with relatable pop-culture references and intelligent wit!
I was not a fan of the narrators computer type voice, yet as I continued to listen, when the humerus bits of text would surface, the narrators deadpan delivery somehow made it even funnier.
Do your soul a favor and enjoy listening to this book!

Clear understanding

Love the delivery, examples, and homework. The homework provides steps that guide the “how to” on incorporating Yama and Niyama in one’s life. Very easy to understand.

Great Information

I loved the book! However, the narrator sounded like a bot, wished she was better.

Robotic narrator but excellent concepts!

This is my first time diving deeper into yogic philosophy. While written by a teacher (though are we all not always students?), I appreciated the simplistic approach and tangible concepts. I wish this came as a workbook! Each chapter ends with prompts to work on for the next month. I enjoyed this book so much that immediately upon completion I started rereading it with the intent to now follow each of the recommendations at the end of every month. I have already had significant transformations in my life, perspective, and internal dialogue. I look forward to continued progression, and later learning more about the other arms of this ethical practice.

The only downside is that the narrator is extremely robotic, and regularly has they convinced that they are a programmed automated voice, but then at other times I'm convinced they're a person! The delivery detracts a bit, but not so much that it is too distracting.

I love the way the narrator read this to me. I felt like she was a close friend telling me tons of truths… over and over… so inspiring and life changing.

Yogic and Stoic Philosophies Are Complimentary

This is a welcome perspective on how to live to be a good human. Ancient wisdom is the same regardless of the name we put on it. Some of the same principles grace ancient texts in every nation and major time period. Enjoy another perspective with unique stories that help anchor the principles of oneness and how to live to be a good human.

Relatability

I loved how the author took these grand eastern principles and brought each one down to simple daily western tasks that makes me feel confident that I can more easily achieve the goal to live by these principles on a grand and small scale.
