Publisher's summary

A scientist reveals the groundbreaking evidence linking many major diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease, to a common root cause - insulin resistance - and shares an easy, effective plan to reverse and prevent it.

We are sick. Around the world, we struggle with diseases that were once considered rare. Cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes affect millions each year; many people are also struggling with hypertension, weight gain, fatty liver, dementia, low testosterone, menstrual irregularities and infertility, and more. We treat the symptoms, not realizing that all of these diseases and disorders have something in common.

Each of them is caused or made worse by a condition known as insulin resistance. And you might have it. Odds are you do - more than half of all adults in the United States are insulin resistant, with most other countries either worse or not far behind.

In Why We Get Sick, internationally renowned scientist and pathophysiology Professor Benjamin Bikman explores why insulin resistance has become so prevalent and why it matters. Unless we recognize it and take steps to reverse the trend, major chronic diseases will be even more widespread. But reversing insulin resistance is possible, and Bikman offers an evidence-based plan to stop and prevent it, with helpful food lists, meal suggestions, easy exercise principles, and more. Full of surprising research and practical advice, Why We Get Sick will help you to take control of your health.

Get Healthy Change your diet

I enjoyed listening to this book having limited time to read plus printing off pages from the accompanying PDF made understanding the importance of changing my diet easy to do. I highly recommend this book.

Useful, Focused on Insulin, not Glucose

This takes the sugar is toxic to a point of understanding it is insulin resistance, not Glucose in the blood which is the problem. There is much useful information.

My favorite is that bariatric surgery often fails, because the diet isn't changed. And, failing at bariatric surgery, you are stuck with all the metabolic abnormalities which brought you there, including insulin resistance, and the fatness and heart issues associated.

It is important to note there are different types of fat cells, which have different functions. You're going to have to listen twice, but understanding helps.

The narrator was adequate, not exceptional. Listenable, but, not remarkable.

Revealing

Thank you Dr Bikman. Your book has helped me better understand my health, and that of my loved ones. I am SO grateful for your effort in putting all of this information together for my benefit.
I used the Levels CGM system Dec 2020, and although it was great having all that data and real-time diet and exercise affects, understanding all of it left me mystified and wanting more. Your explanations helped and encouraged.

Informative and mind blowing

I have had an idea that insulin resistance in some way contributed to my weight gain but the deep dive, yet lay person explanation sent me reeling. I am shocked how much effect this hormone has on our body systems and how off our cultural beliefs are regarding food choices.

Truth + actions steps = a required read

This should be required reading for every doctor, nurse, and registered dietician. In simple terms explains how the body uses insulin and the risks of this hormone when it is too high.
It is as if those in the medical field do not understand this and recommend foods/diet that is completely contradictory to this research as well as giving drugs that do not reduce insulin levels, but increase it.
The end of the book is a step by step plan to get insulin under control.
For anyone with blood disregulation this is one of the top books to read/listen.
