This is the book that will forever change the way we understand and treat mental health. If you or someone you love is affected by mental illness, it might change your life.

We are in the midst of a global mental health crisis, and mental illnesses are on the rise. But what causes mental illness? And why are mental health problems so hard to treat? Drawing on decades of research, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Chris Palmer outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain.

Brain Energy explains this new understanding of mental illness in detail, from symptoms and risk factors to what is happening in brain cells. Palmer also sheds light on the new treatment pathways this theory opens up—which apply to all mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, alcoholism, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, autism, and even schizophrenia. Brain Energy pairs cutting-edge science with practical advice and strategies to help people reclaim their mental health.

This groundbreaking book reveals:

  • why classifying mental disorders as “separate” conditions is misleading;
  • the clear connections between mental illness and disorders linked to metabolism, including diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, pain disorders, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy;
  • the link between metabolism and every factor known to play a role in mental health, including genetics, inflammation, hormones, neurotransmitters, sleep, stress, and trauma;
  • the evidence that current mental health treatments, including both medications and therapies, likely work by affecting metabolism; and
  • new treatments available today that listeners can use to promote long-term healing.

Palmer puts together the pieces of the mental illness puzzle to provide answers and offer hope. Brain Energy will transform the field of mental health, and the lives of countless people around the world.

Like the author, I’ve been on my own health journey for about the past four or five years. Most of the information that I have experimented with or read and consumed focused on weight loss, and maybe a little longevity. I frequently thought while going through all these different avenues that there was a great deal of overlap and some missing pieces. It’s ironic that in a book about mental health there seems to be a unifying theory that makes sense of all the other stuff that I have read through. Another aspect of this book that I enjoyed were the actual case studies. Being that the author has continued to do clinical work I think this adds a great deal of power and validity to the ideas he’s putting forth. I also really enjoy that he is not a zealot of any one form factor, but very holistic, and willing to try anything that addresses mitochondrial health. His passion is never more apparent than in his closing. While I very much enjoyed the author’s personal reading of the material there were times that he was so soft spoken, that it made it difficult to hear. Another aspect that at times was challenging, is in an effort to lay out the entire theory the book covered a great deal of detail. While I believe, he did a great job of trying to make it as understandable as possible to the most amount of people there were times throughout the book it was easy to get lost in the science. That said, I believe if you stuck through the whole book all the pieces were still understandable enough to follow along with the theory he’s presenting. If you set this book alongside Jason Fung’s cancer code book, along with a number of other health and wellness materials it really seems like we have way more power in our hands to control our health destiny then a general surveying of the health landscape might suggest. I found this book, extremely useful, well presented and very important.

What’s interesting about this book written by a male doctor, is that when he’s talking about how prevalent depression is in women, not for a moment, did it occur to him that women live in a culture that devalues women. Estrogen and eating habits and ketone diet is never gonna change the fact that women’s work, having children, being there, for everybody at all times is so undervalued in the society, no wonder women are depressed. But that Factor didn’t even enter his awareness. But it was like asking a fish to describe water. Male entitlement is so invisible to males. Bless their sweethearts.

That being said, because I’m a therapist who encourages all of my clients to get happy, only eat, while they eat, eat, good food, exercise, I will recommend this book so that they can understand why all of these habits are good for them.

Science based approach to mental illness. I worked on the DSM three revised… Back in the 80s. I was a researcher. And I can tell you firsthand what a load of crap it is! But it was under written by big Pharma. And now it is used as a Bible. Poisoning for profit is really what it was/is.

 Missed the invisible

I love these subjects and i read a lot about mental health, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, ketogenic diet. This book is a must of reading because connects metabolic dysfunctions to mental health issues and credits ketogenic lifestyle, exercise, and sleep as solutions to it.

A must read
