Nice Start to a Series

Though this is only the second reverse harem book I have listened to, I much prefer this one over the other I've read. The interactions and characters were natural (well, as much as a mythical beings get) and the development of the relationships were nice. My only wish is that there hadn't been a few moments where I wasn't sure which of the men was speaking. I'm honestly excited to listen to the next book in the series, in part because I love Cassie and her curiosity.

Good Start to Series

This is a short series started book. Quite clean for being a reverse harem.
I liked the narrator, I love a British accent. The heroine is spunky and shows there is more beneath the surface. Her harem is three very different men who are great friends.

Short & Enjoable

Spell Caster is a romantic, reverse harem paranormal mystery, with a decent plot and good character development. The heroine is a high-spirited witch with three mates. Despite the book being a reverse harem, it's not erotica. I wish Cassie and her three men discussed how they were planning to manage their crowded relationship. This was my first time hearing Ruth Bailes and in my opinion, she did a good job narrating this audiobook.

2.5 story, round up

Sigh. This wasn't bad. It was just sort of a mess. For one, it's called a reverse harem, which infers (though admittedly doesn't say) it's erotic. Most reverse harem books you encounter are, so tying itself into a known erotic trope suggests it is too. It isn't. The steamiest this gets is that Cassie kisses each of her mates once (and they're not even descriptive passionate kisses) and then each man kisses her forehead or the top of her head once. There is no passion or eroticism in this at all. If she was interested, I'd let me 9yo read it.

Similarly there isn't any passion (erotic or otherwise) about the mating. Cassie has a calm conversation with each man and then moves on. It literally could have been a work meeting over coffee. (Once even is over coffee.)

But most importantly, how this four-way mating might work isn't addressed at all. It's clarified that each man is her mate and they aren't each others mates (no menage). But I have a hard time believing that will work with no jealousy. Why would these guys share a mate?

The book would have simply been IMMENSELY improved if the author had left the mate element out and let the book be about Cassie getting a new job and earning her spot on the Paranormal Crimes Investigation team. And I honestly think the author would only have had to cut about 2% of the text to make this true. I cannot emphasize enough how underdeveloped the mate aspect is. It's so underdeveloped that it's just a distraction and detraction in the plot. I think I'd have really liked the book if it was just a paranormal mystery. As it is, I was just disappointed.

Note: I received a free copy of this book. I chose to listen and review it.

Detectives?Criminals?

Interesting to find paranormal teaming up to solve cases. How they help other paranormal from being harmed if possible is good. Very intriguing book. #AudiobookObsession

Fun Listen

Paranormal isn’t generally my thing, but this was a fun story, and the narrator did a great job. She drew me in to the story and gave life to the characters. I will definitely be on the lookout for more from her.

Wonderful time listening to it

I love the fact that the author has started more books in the Paranormal Council Universe. While this book may be part of the PCU it is the start of a new RH series! The characters fit perfectly in the PCU and it was nice to see a couple of the people from previous books while the focus was on Cassie and her men.. I can not wait to see what is in store for the rest of this new series.

Casting a beautiful spell

This narration casts a beautiful spell on the listener. The clear voice makes this book really come to life. The story is just amazing which has become the norm for Laura Greenwood’s books.

Magic & Science

This was a great start to a new series! The Paranormal Council has placed Casie, a witch, undercover in a lab checking blood specimens to hide the paranormal world from the humans. She gets a blood sample that’s unusual and off the charts and she gets thrown into a world of murder and investigation with three men. I loved the mix of science, magic, and mystery and seeing more of the Paranormal Council Universe. I loved that each member of her team/ harem were different types of paranormals- Hadrian is a vampire, Isaac is a necromancer, and Zack is a bat shifter. Each of them were likable, had different personalities, and had different strengths and weaknesses. I can’t wait to see what the next mystery will be in this series and the journey it takes Cassie and her men on! Her voice was easy to listen to although I wish her characters had more of their own voice. I loved her British accent and she kept me hooked until the very end!
Ruth did a great job with this narration!

Nice but a bit short

I really wish this book was longer. The storyline and characters have a lot of potential. Unfortunately the story just felt rushed and unfinished. I wanted so much more between the characters and of the interesting story. I hope Laura writes more about this group.

Ruth did a nice job narrating. She didn't have a ton of variation in the different characters but her voice is nice to listen to.

Slow burn paranormal RH.

Being involved in solving a crime is not what Cassie was expecting when asked to look into an abnormal blood sample. She finds more than just an evil criminal when PCI comes asking for help. Love the mix if paranormal and crime fighting.

Could be more

I wish this was a series or a longer book. So much was left unknown. Good story nonetheless. Narration was done very well. Loved the concepts of the book! Wish there was more to answer more questions.

Good mystery

I enjoyed this quick audiobook. It turned out to be like a mystery romance, had some great action and suspense as well. I would have enjoyed more magic/supernatural powers happening but that is just a personal preference. Unfortunately, no steamy scenes. The narrator did an excellent job bringing the characters to life and making them distinct.

Intriguing

This is not a genre I've ever read or listened to before, so I didn't know what to expect.
It took me a little while to get into, but once I was a couple of chapters in I wanted to find out where the story was going, who these characters were and what would unfold...
Spellcaster was intriguing, it left me feeling like their could be more in the series, or it could equally be a standalone book. It was an easy listen.
The narration was clear, warm and soothing, Ruth Bailes had me transported to Cassie's lab and visualising the characters in my mind. I look forward to listening to more of her narration in future.

This is a great paranormal mystery with an unusual mix of shifters. The characters have brilliant chemistry. It is a great start to a new series with amazing narration.
