Publisher's summary

A werewolf killer. A paranormal murder. How many times can Emma Bellamy cheat death?

I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. But that’s nothing compared to what happens next.

Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up 12 hours later in the morgue - and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. I don’t know who killed me. All I know is that they might try again.

Werewolves are disappearing right, left, and centre.

A mysterious vampire seems intent on following me everywhere I go.

And I have to solve my own vicious killing. Preferably before death comes for me again.

Really Enjoyed This Book

Totally enjoyed this book, liked Emma, Tony, and sup squad. Lucas was very likable, and Emma and Lucas worked well together.

Pre-ordered book 2, can hardly wait to listen to the next installment.

A spark of a romance, which I really like, but no sex scenes, which I totally love.

Narration was excellent.

So good!

I love it! I pre-ordered Brimstone Bound because I trust the author. Everything I have listened to from Helen Harper has been fab and this story didn't disappoint. I'm excited for more to come! The narrator did a good job. I do have to set my listening speed a little faster with Ruth because she slows down when she's reading a character that's speaking and it's a little too slow for my liking, but that's just me.

I want to strangle the main character

I like Helen Harper's book, but I suffered with this one. Emma is a trainee, but she acts like she is the only one that can solve the case. I hope the next book is better.

Almost a cozy paranormal mystery procedural

Decent paranormal mystery following detective-in-training Emma as she gets assigned to the supernatural squad, that normally just sits around and pretends to keep the peace between humans, vampires, and werewolves. But, Emma shakes things up in more ways than one as murders start piling up... including her own. Her coming back from the dead is a nice twist, especially considering the tired humans vs. vamps vs. weres thing.

What kept this in “okay” range was the lack of any detail that wasn’t directly related to the central mystery. Character background for Lucas? Physical description for Emma? Personality quirks? Clever dialogue or repartee? How about the setting or the weather? I wanted more meat on these bones.

This lack of detail also made for a shallow mystery. Good mysteries have misdirects, but this one’s few attempts failed miserably, like when Emma thinks “x was surely my killer,” and you therefore know x is absolutely not the killer. Good mystery series will also spend time painting depth into MCs and supporting characters alike. Everyone was rather flat and went from plot point to plot point in perfunctory, connect the dots fashion.

Having said all that, however, I’d consider book two on sale. There is the barest hint of a romance, some cussing, and cozy mystery level violence. Fit for YAs that can handle occasional Fbombs. In fact, I’d also note the narration makes Emma seem like a 12 year old Nancy Drew rather than a 20 yr old trained copper. This may be a better fit for the YA audience than for me.

Entertaining supe story

Good plot line with several twists you won't see coming. Narrator was good and easy to listen to.

Interesting concept

The overall story was a bit repetitive and a tad predictable but the potential is there and rather intriguing. I'll definitely give the second book a listen.

Something different

I started listening to the story and found the British accents refreshing, even though it took me a while to get use to it. The story itself was different and I loved the fact that there was magical realism embedded within the story.
