Publisher's summary

"I've awakened in a stone box about the size of a large coffin.... I'm filthy, everything aches, and, by the various so-called gods, I smell awful. I've woken up in worse places. Hmm. What does that say about my life choices?" (Eric, amateur magician, part-time vampire, and accidental king)

It's not easy being king. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the fire priestess/princess; a couple of lightly deranged professional magicians; a whole city full of wizards; and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home. Luckily for Eric, he has the world's fastest pet rock, a smart-mouthed sword, and a horse that not only understands him but likes him anyway.

Even better than the last!

I do not normally write reviews, but I had to for this book. The first book in this series was spectacular but this book eclipses the first by far. Gritty, dark fantasy, wonderful world building, exceptional characters, humor and death. This book has it all. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Great story telling Garon, thank you for a wonderful series. And Sean, you really bring the book to life for me. Thank you both.

Sean Runnette is awesome as always.

it was a fun story, the first one is a little bit better, it definitely feels like a middle book though. wasn't particularly happy with the first twist. The end threw me off a bit but sets up the next book nicely

good story, but lots of inconsistencies

If you could sum up Shadows in three words, what would they be?

I love Sean

If you’ve listened to books by Garon Whited before, how does this one compare?

I listened to this series, i am about 6 hours from completing book 3, and i dont know if i will listen to another story by Garon.
The stories in themselves are good, and I like his world building and the characters, but the stories all seem like they do nothing as far as progression for the first 34 hours, then the last 2 hours are a rush to the finish line.

Someone described the story as a bunch of side-quests in a RPG to level up and then be over powered for the main story boss and totally cheese the fight.
The reason I probably wont read another story by Gary are the inconsistencies that go on in the stories

/SPOILER ALERT

1)
Eric starts as a normal guy, turns into a vampire/person he can perform magic day and night, then something happens along the way and he loses the ability to perform magic during the night halfway through book 1, in book 2 he can do magic just fine at night and this is never explained.
2)
The world of Rethven is described to pass slower than the earth he came from i think he said about 3 days to 1 day ratio, but when it gets time to move between worlds, what seems like only a few hours on earth is about 10-12 hours in Rethven time, it sort of breaks immersion for me.
3)
The main nemesis in book 2 does some pretty odd stuff that is never really explained.

Which character – as performed by Sean Runnette – was your favorite?

Sean does all characters very well. he's one of my favorite Narrators, and the main reason i ended up with this series.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

42 hours of book, i think not ;)

Great book!!!

The narrator was outstanding! I do not agree with many of the frustrations about the ending. Think about when the Lord of the rings would get to a stopping point and you would have to wait for the next movie to see what happens. That is how this book ends. I hope it is not too long before it comes out on audio book. If you like long books, and do not mind too much scientific explanation, then I recommend this book to you. I didn't even listen to the first book, yet was brought up to speed rather quickly with a good understanding of what happened.

Struggle...

After the excitement of the first book. This one is a struggle to get through. 85% of the book is about the mundane life of King building a kingdom and not of a hero growing their legend by slaying dragons. My guess is that it's simply a setup book for book 3. Not sure if I want to continue this series.

Update: Picked up the series again with book 3 after some other lackluster books. Book 3 is a return to form. Loved it. Going crazy waiting on book 4.

Worth the listen but it can be a bit slow.

I loved the first book in the series and I enjoyed this one as well, but I did start to feel like most of this book was just him planning and running his kingdom with very little real plot development. The ending (no spoilers) was a bit disappointing as well. Here’s to hoping the next book picks up the pace a bit.

Holy Crap

My emotions were everywhere. Loved the science and the story. The evolution of the cities and of course Bronze and Firebrand.

Great Listening Continues

I enjoyed "Shadows" immensely. Again, the author's abundance of imagination and his ability to make me feel as if I'm listening to one of my friends tell me about the situations that he has encountered and all of the ways he managed to handle them. I especially enjoyed the explanations for many of the solutions--even the scientific ones.
Again, I enjoyed the conversational dialogue, even when the King went into the teaching mode. Funniest of all, is that he did not want to be King but he was so good at ruling.
The narrator did another good job and I would recommend this selection to anyone.

I absolutely love this series. I can't wait for number 3. I am sure it will be as good as the first two.
