A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war. A chance to start over. For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters. Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end. It's just another Wuxia
Yea, its just another Wuxia.
You have the author pulling out the cancer card, to make you feel for bad the 17 year old MC. You have your typical racism that is just covered up by calling ANY foreigner a piece of garbage, bow to me before your better etc etc, Then you have your MC always getting his butt kicked with another terrible damn ending OH and the 50% of the book being inner monologue.
That is just another Wuxia.

Overuse of a thesaurus.
Overuse of the word utter. Overly flowery language that looks like the "passion of a thousand suns" model of description.
Found myself rolling my eyes, and muttering get on with it a lot.
Was reading reviews from the future books and it looks like cultivation speed will be extremely slow in this series.
Will just stick to the cradle series, this one doesn't match up at all.

WuxiaWorld!!!!
I have to compliment the author on how he launched this story. Sometimes authors can do too much too fast, and it weakens the whole experience for me. I like to be taken to another world, not just dumped there so the real story can begin. The author, did kinda dump us ...but it ended up being a pump fake, n the true transition was very gradual.
The fact that the author managed to make the story a xanxia story with in-game elements is a plus for me. I love the whole notion of cultivating, meridians, dantians, cores, etc ...that's my jam all by itself. Add to that xp and leveling, with good action scenes and a whole new world to explore ...that's game over, the series is destined for greatness.
This is gonna end up being one of my favorite series on audible. Reminds me of the early days of checking wuxiaworld for translated chapters or Coiling Dragon or I Shall Seal The Heavens. MC here is no Meng Hao, but he's cool. I'm about to make use of my Kindle Unlimited for the first time in forever, cuz I literally can't wait for the next book to come out in audio format.

I can only sacrifice so many brain cells
This will be the last book I buy by MH Johnson. I can no longer take sentences the size of paragraphs. I almost loved endless online, at least the first book. it was rough but I thought it was Johnson's first outing and could get better. I couldn't make it a tenth of the way through the second installment. Johnson came across as wanting to be Shakespearean , without the requisite level of talent. wuxia is one of my favorite sub genres so I had to give this a chance. I should have thrown in the towel earlier and received a refund. the main narrator goes from campy, to over-the-top, to stereotyping. I'm not going to say he's a bad narrator though. I think it was more of a content problem. the main female narrator is pretty good though. it's too bad as Johnson has a very fertile imagination. sentence structure is just too weak. Johnson's tendency to often make flowery speeches and structures especially in some situations are simply too frustrating. the lack of a diverse large cast also contributed to a less enjoyable story. I made it 80% of the way through this book.

One of the best
I loved the book. This has been a wonderful performance of it. I enjoyed this narrator in Endless Online. Reading out stats and enhancements like a gameshow host listing out fabulous prizes was genius. I'm so impressed with the lush descriptions. The narration brings intensity and feelings if real peril for Alex the hero. Wifi or silver fox the trickster god adds a lot to the epic feel. I love heros that both have to run for their lives and run right into the thick of things. Alex the cultivator is a superhero in my eyes, even though he's still an early culivator in thus story. I definitely recommend both the book and audiobook.

don't read the epilogue
A relatively good book that I would've given another star if not for the authors tendency to mention mini mini times how terrified and scared and quivering in fear and whatever the main character is over every single thing.
That is until the epilogue the epilogue stinks on ice there is no part of it that I enjoyed in anyway shape or form.

Did not like the ending!
It was a fast paced book. I liked the story generally. To much cultivation for me personally. Once your invested into the main group of characters the story stops with a few minutes explanation to prepare for a new adventure maybe? Just left you feeling like what thats it.... Not sure if I'll buy book 2 unless it gets hard to find a book with litrpg or something similar.

Disturbingly Realistic
There is a reason most writers make these wuxia novels about native characters and that's because the cultural zeitgeist of pretty much all countries during the feudal times these stories parody were relentlessly racist and this book is no exception. The mc is reincarnated into a fantasy chinese world, he is a cultivator and has deity level meridians all good. The only problem is that he is foreigner. Cue constant racism from the already supremely arrogant cultivator caste further enhanced by being filter through the relentless naivety of a modern teenager.
Read if you are hard up for your wuxia/xianxia fix and don't mind having to read constantly about how the western barbarians sin against the ground they walk on seriously every conflict he has with people is plastered with their racism even his nominal allies have it.

Great start, sadly that was the best part.
The premise and the start, first 4 or so chapters where pretty good, but the following where we get to listen to a main character who is seemingly unable to have sense of pride in himself nor the balls to hate himself, be forced through happen stance after happen stance sacrificing himself for people who really just treat him like trash was hard and got harder the more you listened to it, and the worst part of it he seemingly does not have the ability to feel anything but sad repressed honour for being allowed to be treated as he is or a combination of emabresment and shame for even being alive.
the voice actors were okay though, not really the best fit for the main character but the other voiced definitely were pretty well done.

Story
Miraculously, Alex had survived the crucible of combat and emerged victorious, earning the right to attend Dragon Academy. But his trials had only begun. For Alex had dared the unthinkable. A despised Ruidian entering Dragon Academy was an abomination the school’s elite would stop at nothing to destroy, eager to cripple or kill him if they possibly could. Even worse, Alex’s mentor was notorious for throwing his disciples into the thick of any conflict, no matter how unfair the odds.

Alex gazed at the golden steps before him, pretending he was just another cultivator eager to attend Royal Phoenix Academy, and not the most wanted man in the entire province. His fellow aspirants mocked him with their smiles. They expected him to plummet to his death the moment they began their climb, washed away by the flood of spiritual energy pouring down those steps.
