Publisher's summary

Newly revised version now read by award-winning narrator Sean Runnette!

From birth to death, The War is all the citizens of Dystance know. As children it is drilled into their heads that war is the purpose behind all existence.

Winter doesn't agree. She's stumbled across remnants of life the way it was before The War began, and now she longs to be as free as her ancestors.

With help from her best friend, Cedar, and the boy she is forbidden to love, Tallow, she believes she can do it. Winter can see a life beyond the Pickets, beyond the constant hunger and the threat of death, beyond the war machine.

Can one teenage girl and her dream of a better life really change the whole world?

Unbelievable, melodramatic romance.

While the story is OK, this novel is an unbelievable, melodramatic romance mis-categorized as science fiction. There are many inconsistencies in the story line - Paper, not to mention books, is so rare and scarce in Dystance, yet everyone can read fluently, and Winter can even figure out how to use a dictionary, though she has never seen one. Tallow shoots and kills two Brokers the first time he uses a rifle, missing and only grazing Winter's shoulder though she is in the line of fire. Cedar figures out how to load, and fire an M16, though she has no experience with guns. This story has possibilities, but the inconsistencies and melodrama turn me off, and I will not purchase the 2nd book.

SEAN GIVES THIS A UNIQUE TWIST! SURPRISE ENDING!

Well, I like how Mark rebranded this one...I see what he did...and I think I kinda know where he is gonna go with this one; Well maybe..Mark is unpredictable most times....But I like what I heard! I loved the old version too, this one took me a minute to settle into, because I had listened to the old one 3 times and was in love with the characters already, I could hear them in my head, the old way...lol I am huge Sean Runnette fan, so it just took a bit to get used to this way..and he did a great job, he gave the story a lot of heart, and humor...and he made me believe it all over again...Im really excited that Winter made it this time..and I cant wait to listen to the next one!!!

ANOTHER WINNER MR TUFO!!! I RECOMMEND!!!!

Liked the Book

I liked the story but had a hard time with the narrator as, while he was good, the main character was a girl and it's so hard to listen to something in first person from a girl's perspective in a male's voice. He also sounded grandfatherly which made it worse. I would have preferred either a women narrator or perhaps both male and female for this one. Other than that, I enjoyed the story. It was unique.

Sean Runette is the voice of Mike Talbot not a 16 yr old girl.

Not that he can’t pull it off. The problem is the character is just like Mike Talbot. Extreme angst about the burden of war and leadership. Her sidekick Cedar is only half as funny as Trip, so comic relief was lacking. Maybe I’m burned out on Tufo’s style. It’s very repetitive.

Brilliant

Worth 10 credits. I can't wait for the next one! Great story for teens to 100 year olds. Fun links to characters from the authors other series. Hunger game feel but with wonderful questions.

Teenage angst

Endless flirting with sophomoric sexual tension. Teenage girls might love this book - I found it insufferable.

Couldn't finish.

Same book

I love Mark Tufo's books and always look forward to the next release of which ever book he has just finished. I was very disappointed when I started this story, I have already listened to this book, but with a woman telling it. I have been waiting for the next installation, and was even excited because it has Sean Runnette reading it, but sadly it was the same book with a different reader. :'(

mark tufo and sean do it again

Sean is a wonderful narrator. The revamping of this book is awsome! Winter is a strong female character so many books lack.

Using male voice for main character (female) poor choice!

Good book but terrible choice for narrator. Not only is this a male voice but an OLDER male voice for a young woman. Whoever made this decision needs to rethink it!
