Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Braving the Wilderness, written and read by Brené Brown.

'True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are.' Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarisation. With her trademark mix of research, storytelling and honesty, Brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping out a clear path to true belonging.

Brown argues that what we're experiencing today is a spiritual crisis of disconnection, and introduces four practices of true belonging that challenge everything we believe about ourselves and each other. She writes, 'True belonging requires us to believe in and belong to ourselves so fully that we can find sacredness both in both being a part of something, and in standing alone when necessary. But in a culture that's rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it's easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism. But true belonging is not something we negotiate or accomplish with others; it's a daily practice that demands integrity and authenticity. It's a personal commitment that we carry in our hearts.' Brown offers us the clarity and courage we need to find our way back to ourselves and to each other. And that path cuts right through the wilderness.

Brown writes, 'The wilderness is an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. It is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared. But it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it's the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.'

Brave and True and Timely!

My thanks to Brene for taking the road less travelled and paying the price. You are helping us all to take risks and follow God's Way to freedom, collectively and personally .... by loving our NEIGHBOUR as our SELF. And the only Way to have the power do that is to know God's love for ALL, by GRACE.

I am the wilderness!

I sit here intertwining tears of sorrow with laughs of joy, I feel a deep sense of release. I feel gotten and heard. Standing alone, belonging nowhere and everywhere.
Loved hearing Brene's story, I identify so much. I am truely grateful for this text, each one of her books building from the last. The truth literally hitting home in my wild heart.
But it, listen to it, follow the advice. Heal yourself and help heal our disconnected, spiritually sick world. God bless you brene. I value your vulnerability and courage so much.

So poignant and relevant today

Brene has touched a nerve with this book, of what is tearing apart our world and communities today. In my view it is essential reading. On a personal level, Brene again delivers relevant and authentic explanations for her research - and to hear it delivered in her voice was such a gift. I can highly recommend this - even if you don't agree with everything she says it's an important dialogue to be a part of. Thank you Brene for your courage to stand alone and show others an example to do the same.

Tear jerker, deep, amazing, powerful.

I loved this book. Brene touched on an upsoken part of me, a wound I had no words for, a pain that can't be spoken with such grace, authenticity and truth that I spend most of this book crying or with a frog in my throat. Thank you.

Inspiring, insightful and challenging

I love Brenes way of so easily getting across the research and building it in a way that it speaks to us all, no matter what our beliefs or stage of life.

I also love that Brene has narrated this herself, it brings another level of value, connectedness and trust to her writing and work.

Book of my heart

I have loved all of Brené's books I have listened, but this one has been the one to touch my heart.
There is a saying I love 'You need to stand for something or you will fall for everything.' in this book Brené shows us a way of doing this without losing yourself to the 'cause' or need to 'belong'.

Interesting but not personally as helpful

I love Dr Brown's early work, but found this part of her research less helpful. There was a lot of repetition but fewer helpful "guideposts" on how to actually achieve a "soft front" or a "wild heart". Still worth a listen, but something I am less likely to come back to than Daring Greatly which gave more practical guidance.
