Audible Editor Reviews

"Mika is a human, in an alley, surrounded by four horny werewolves." So boldly begins the bizarre and erotically explicit tale Mate Set: Mating Heat, Book 1, narrated with game, breathless enthusiasm by G. C. VonCloudts.

In this alternate world, the horny werewolves are in charge, the horny humans are the outcasts, violence lurks everywhere, and seemingly every man, woman, and animal has nothing but sex on the brain. Perhaps fans of True Blood will appreciate this steamy and vaguely creepy story.

Publisher's Summary

It's werewolf mating season. All the males are in heat and the driving, sexual lust of their beasts is almost uncontrollable. Mika is human, in an alley, surrounded by four horny werewolves. She knows she's in deep shit. A tall, handsome werewolf rescues her then demands payment. Hot, sweaty, intimate payment.

Grady is a half breed whose human mother abandoned him to his werewolf father, so he knows human women just aren't safe to fall in love with. The wolf within him wants Mika as his mate, but Grady will not give in. Never. Ever. He's willing to fight his emotions and his beast, no matter how much sexy Mika tempts him.

But neither of them expected her Uncle Omar to assign Grady to protect her from other males - 24/7, in her home, sleeping just down the hall. Mika decides to make the best of her vacation and keep the hot wolf in her bed. Grady can't resist the scorching sex, but he is determined to resist the bond.

"Erotica with a plot. Download both books now!"
Would you listen to Mate Set again? Why?

I loved this book and it's worth the credit. The alpha males make great lovers. Listen to both books in a row and was pissed I didn't download them
at the same time.

What other book might you compare Mate Set to and why?

    New species series.

Have you listened to any of G. C. VonCloudts’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This narrator is Theressa Plummer using a different name. I would know her voice anywhere after listing to all of Robynn Carr's audiobooks. She knocked it out of the park and I will listen to both books again and again.

    "Erotic-Themed Shifter Romance Story!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if they are in to Paranormal Romance Shifter Stories...heavy on the Eroticism.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Minnie! She is the only character that had any sense whatsoever.

Did G. C. VonCloudts do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

G C V did an excellent job differentiating the female character voices; however, the male character voices leave a lot to be desired.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really. I had to listen to the sex scenes in doses. There were so many of them.

    Any additional comments?

Beyond the numerous sex scenes, the story had potential. I will give the second installment a chance.

    "Alright start to the series"

*** warning, this review might be a bit spoilerish****

I had mixed feelings about this story. It was well written and was alright but I had issues with the conflicts and the ways they were handled. Grady seemed iffy through most of the story and Mika was put in impossible situations that just made me feel bad for her. There is some insta-love going for those that don't like that sort of thing.

Mika lives in California and has a life but nothing is really holding her there. She has an uncle Omar that is a werewolf shifter and she goes back to her home town to visit him regularly. She's thought of moving back to be closer to him but he wants her to marry a human and thinks it's too dangerous for her to live there full time.

Grady is the first born of the pack Alpha in a wolf shifter pack. His mother was human and wasn't with his father when she started raising Grady. When he started showing signs of being a werewolf as a kid, Grady's mom found his dad and dropped Grady on his dad's doorstep. Unfortunately, Grady's dad's mate is a horrible woman who looked down on Grady because he was half human and wouldn't allow him to be taken in. Grady was raised by a number of families in the pack instead. Now he's known for staying away from humans except for the occasional one night stand.

Mika comes to town to visit for a couple weeks, She knows about shifters but her uncle doesn't bother to tell her that it's mating season (a time she's never visited before). This means that there are many strange werewolves in the area looking for sex and they're not all very picky about who they get it from. Humans are supposed to be off limits but not all the visitors follow the same rules. So Mika is in town and craving some chocolate so she goes for a stroll to the store and gets dragged in to an alley by 4 werewolves. She screams as they're trying to start a gang rape and before too long, Grady comes along and saves her. He then proceeds to come looking for some repayment (but they don't actually have sex). Mika is rather embarrassed by the whole thing (and was rather turned on by Grady) so she doesn't say anything to her aunt or uncle about the incident. Omar does finally realize that Mika needs guarded against the strange wolves in town and decides to draft one of the best enforcers in the pack, Grady.

So as her guard, Grady is staying with Mika 24/7 but pretty much treating her like crap and barely talking to her. She's pretty much locked in the house so she pushes to go out. They go to Grady's bar which is supposed to be safe ground but Mika almost gets abducted by a strange shifter right there in the bar and in order to save her from a horrible fate, Grady is forced to lay claim to her. Uncle Omar isn't happy about it but the way it happens means they have to have sex (during the rest of the mating season) or Grady will go crazy. Mika's Uncle basically gives her to Grady to have sex with for the next 2 weeks. Mika isn't all that happy about it at first but she was already attracted to Grady and figures she'll go along with it. Grady makes it very clear that he doesn't want a human mate so Mika knows she's headed for trouble when she realizes that she's fallen for Grady within the first couple days. Then she's pretty much plagued with life being horrible because Grady is constantly showing her that she's not what he wants and it hurts her. Grady is so clueless that he doesn't realize what the heck is going on or that his actions are hurtful. This pretty much continues until the end and then was have a whiplash turnaround and Grady and Mika get their HEA.

To be honest, the way the story went just didn't work for me, probably because I'm not in to the constant drama. The forced situations and frequent ups and downs (but mostly downs) wasn't really my thing so I had trouble getting fully in to the story. I liked Mika and wished for her to get her happiness but I was less than convinced that Grady would be the one to give it to her (at least until the last 5% of the book). I can see someone liking this story that was more in to the forced situations and big drama. I may try the next book in the series as I've heard it's better than this one and I do like the author. :D

"I became more and more disappointed"
    Any additional comments?

Good beginning, but I was disappointed and angry with most of the conflicts. Heroine makes stupid assumptions.
But as the story progressed I became more and more disappointed. The main conflicts between the two were based on inaccurate assumptions and vague communication. Mika was falling in love with Grady, but he didn’t reciprocate. Mika felt rejected because she knew he wanted a werewolf for a mate. She was angry at Grady for various “assumed” reasons. The major conflict causing her to leave was based on hearing Grady talk about someone else and thinking he was talking about her. When Grady tried to explain she refused to listen. In fact she threatened him with something if he even talked to her. Thus he was forced to be quiet and not explain anything. This was such a cheap device to extend the conflict I was angry.
I would have preferred the author show how Grady’s feelings change during the book. We don’t see how or why he fell in love with Mika. We do know he didn’t want her in the beginning – other than for sex.

"Ok on story and heat scale was so very!!"

This story slowed down and got repetitive several times, but it was easy enough to follow along. My biggest problem with this was that it was not good in dual Point of View (POV), you only get her side. It makes for a very incomplete feeling of the story.

    "Wow, this book was intense!"

I loved the narrator. Laurann hit a home run. Grady made every mistake he could possible make with a "human woman" he could. Like the new species books the backstory on the wolves is so detailed due to the rules of engagement during mating that I was tense waiting for Mika to walk into another land mine that by the end of the story she was in a situation I personally would not have forgiven! I am on to the next in the series!

"Worth my credit! An enjoyable sex fantasy."

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. It was my first werewolf listen. This had A LOT of steamy sex. I like to get away from reality, this sex fantasy cured it for me. I'm getting the next book in series.

"anglo human girl gets 1/2 breed alpha male in heat"

An adopted 28 anglo girl visits her shifter uncle. She falls for the alpha leads bastard oldest half breed son during the summer heat. He has issues due to his mixed breed nature. She develops feelings but, has to be realistic. Mating with an human is looked down on. Her adopted parents had received hardship due to her mother being a shifter and her father being human. But her mother's brother also loved his niece like his own. She knew about shifters but. her heart fell in love. She can't just have sex without attachments. But, the issues that the lead alpha's 1/2 breeds son is in the way of mating a full wolf female or fall for a human female like his mother. But, knowing his human mother left him. Alone and didn't bond with him made him fear that the human female he cared for would do the same. This was a nice sexy story.. No diversity of other skin colors other than different races of human with shifters all anglo with pale skin. Good ending. Worth a credit. Hope to find out if she attempts to be "turned " or have pups.

"Just relized that this narrator goes by another na"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yea, in a round about way. I love "His Purrfect Mate", though this book didn't reach that level of admiration for me and book 3 came up short for me too. Still, I can't argue that I love G.C Voncloudts' narration. Her voice is just too good for immitation shifter wolves. It's got a gravely or cat like purr to it.

Would you be willing to try another book from Laurann Dohner? Why or why not?

    Alread have.

Have you listened to any of G. C. VonCloudts’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Didn't know she also went by the name Therese Plummer. There are quite a few titles under that name too.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could but like I said, the book itself had a bit too much angst for my taste.

    Any additional comments?

Still look for anything new in this series from Laurann Dohner and hope that G.C. VonCloudts still continues to narrate for this series.
