Least Helpful Parenting Book I've Read

For the past 2 years, I've hosted a podcast where we review parenting books and I've read and reviewed over 50 parenting books for the podcast.
Raising Boys was the least researched, referenced, and helpful book of the 50+ I've read and I will not be doing a podcast Episode on it.
The book starts with an emphasis on manners, deference for elders, and proper punishment to maintain authority. Ch 4 moved on to discuss the importance of proper grooming and clothes. The author seems to value fitting-in over individual self expression.
Dozens of more qualified authors have better guidance for fostering mutual respect that comes from within your child instead of outdated behaviorist approaches. I especially recommend Janet Lansbury, Dan Siegel, and TP Bryson.
it's a shame there aren't more books specifically about boys, but I advise skipping this one.

Lacks intelligent content

This book is a compilation of what you would find in a generic google search. It does not break down how to implement change at different ages based on cognitive development and abilities; instead it says “play sports with boys”. It doesn’t discuss common problems at different ages with a variety of approaches to address them; instead it says “be consistent with rules”. The book addresses parenting at a very high surface level. Does not feel like the Author has children, a degree, or is qualified to write on the topic. I am very disappointed in the lack of intelligent content.

so many stereotypes!

The narrator was fine but within the first 30 minutes I heard at least 10 stereotypes about boys. a lot of what he says could be useful but it's so narrow to the stereotype of what boys are that it's borderline offensive. I would have rather just heard the parenting tips about what could or could be useful for a variety of types of children whether male or female or non-binary.

Raising boys

I loved this booked. It was easy to listen to and gave great advise and reminders on the importance of raising my boys (ages 4 and 5) correctly. I plan to listen to it again in a month or so as a refresher.

Fantastic audiobook.

Fantastic audiobook. If you are searching for a brain based guide to raising your boys, this is the audiobook to purchase. I was initially hesitant to purchase this audiobook as the title was somewhat off-putting, but I quickly learned what the others mean when they say "discipline". It means, "to teach". Wonderful audiobook. Highly recommend it, and I've listen most of the other popular parenting audiobooks on the market.

Don't knock it until you try it.

Don't knock it until you try it. There will be those who will stubbornly close their hearts to the instruction and guidance but for those who choose to accept the help, the transformation is remarkable.

Sexist with useless sweeping generalisations

As a gender studies academic, I found the lack of actual science and rigour in this book in favour of sweeping generalisations, stereotypes and lazy thinking is shocking and sad. Potentially doing more harm than good via the above combined with parental shaming and scare tactics, I’d say AVOID.

This is a phenomenal listen. While it is incredibly challenging it helps foster a mindset that is beneficial for a developing mind. Even as a teacher I think this is a useful resource for developing better skills to manage the classroom.

I absolutely loved this audiobook

I realized that my kids weren’t acting the way I wanted them to because I wasn’t communicating to them the way I should have been. I absolutely loved this audiobook and all the examples of how to deal with certain types of situations.

This audiobook was exactly what I needed.

This audiobook was exactly what I needed. I was able to apply the tips, strategies, and techniques as I was listening through the audiobook. I could see a huge improvement in my kids right away, but the greatest improvement was in myself and how I talked to my kids and handled melt downs and stressful situations.

Not the Steve Biddulph book of the same title

This is a misleading book and Audible should remove it from their catalogue. Not only is it NOT the Steve Biddulph book, it means I’ve spent an Audible credit in a 38 minute book. That’s a rip off. Do not buy this book unless you’re in search of the kind of platitudes you can find for free on Pinterest.

A Grand Generalization

No specific content or references. Book admits to being broadly generalized. Can pass on the message of the book in one sentence: Be there for him and spend time with him. Really nothing irrelevant to raising girls.

Not worth it. A total waste of time and money. Even utterly hopeless parents know how to do everything in this book. The whole content of this book is just someone's opinion with nothing out of the ordinary and no science or studies to back anything up.

Basic manners

I can’t believe this book has done so well. It’s just common sense with some good old fashioned manners. It might suit parents who didn’t have good upbringings and learn the basics. But I would tell all the parents i know not to waste their time.

To make it worse the narrator has the most annoying voice!
