Publisher's Summary

Why does it feel sometimes as if our children have special powers that enable them to tune us out completely? You ask your child to do her homework, get ready for school or bedtime. You think she heard you but... no response. You've tried everything - time-outs, nagging, counting to three - and nothing seems to work. In this invaluable audiobook, Amy McCready, founder of the popular online parenting course Positive Parenting Solutions, presents a nag-and-scream-free program for compassionately yet effectively, correcting your children's bad behavior. McCready draws on Adlerian psychology and Positive Discipline, which focuses on the central idea that every human being has a basic need to feel connected and empowered - children being no exception to the rule. According to McCready, when this need isn't met in positive ways, kids resort to negative methods. In this book she provides parents with a virtual toolbox of strategies they can use to give their children the attention and power they crave - and do away with the misbehaving that adults dread.

Great book, will test

Sounds great, and the few things I've already put into practice are working. She convinced me enough that I plan to outline the book and memorize the tools and strategies and when and how to use them. The real test of the book is how it works in practice, and I will find that out.

There is a little cheesiness to get past, but don't let it bother you.

Good content, not so good structure

Interesting content but the structure of the book isn't the best. She goes over the problem and then you have to wait a few chapters for the solution. Also seems more like a reference book than a book you sit down and read at once

I feel more empowered!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The narrator did a great job delivering the different dialogues of parent and child. I learned a great deal from the suggestions. I feel that these positive principles coincide with my natural tendency for diplomacy and civility but also sets expectations that don't relinquish my control. It was an eye-opener to realize that we often fall into the bossy "parent-ego" role that we are accustomed to and have probably learned from generations of parents before us....all of whom were winging it themselves. The concepts I learned here can also be applied to other relationships beyond parenting. I look forward to finding the balance between utilizing these tools which will empower me & my child...all while keeping me in charge. I am eager to share this with my husband so we can practice this together. Thank you.

very helpful book that I hope to re read again

I liked the useful real life examples mentioned in the book and very non complicated solutions to them. I recomend it to anyone who wants to become a happier adult/parent and raise a decent human being.

Step by step guide to parenting.

Have read through multiple books on parenting. Have enjoyed the ones with a heavier base in neuroscience. This book is a hands on how-to-do it guide that will give you tips that make logical sense when you think about them. Easy to listen to with a conclusion that gives you action steps to begin with the bare necessities. I will be listening over and over again.
