After Eric Davis spent over 16 years in the military, including a decade in the SEAL teams, his family was more than used to his absence on deployments and secret missions that could obscure his whereabouts for months at a time. Without a father figure in his own life since the age of 15, Eric was desperate to maintain the bonds he'd fought so hard to forge when his children were young - particularly with his son, Jason, because he knew how difficult it was to face the challenge of becoming a man on one's own.

Current child-rearing techniques seek to develop children who are confident, self-assured, and unafraid to speak their minds-lions instead of lambs. Although largely positive, this shift has brought with it some very serious problems in our children's behavior. Without going back to an authoritarian model, Joe Newman has developed new ways of helping children develop the ability to self-regulate without undermining their confidence, and individuality.

This book, and the ideas and methods behind Positive Discipline, are totally usable. That's my favorite thing about it. Amazing ideas made my children disciplined
This book offers some amazing ideas that I believe children everywhere would greatly benefit from. It explains why "kids these days" don't have the same sense of responsibility and respect that they had in the past. There is a strong focus on letting go of the idea that making a child feel worse will then make them do better. The focus is on solutions and long-term outcome...not punishment and immediate behavior. It is not, however, about "letting them get away with it" (whatever "it" may be). It explains the difference between praise and encouragement, a difficult but important distinction.

Provides lots of effective steps
This book has effective steps to follow in order to put all that theoretical knowledge into practice. I am only on chapter three and am already seeing improvements in our relationship and both of our behaviors. Not only that, these new patterns are sustainable, whereas, with some of the other books I follow the advice for a while, but they go out the door during times of stress. I've told friends before that good parenting is for families who can afford to have a parent stay at home. lol. This book acknowledges the chaos of contemporary life and gives you ways of maintaining a connection even when there is a lot of stress. It is also helping me discover a lot of things about myself, which other books attempt but will honestly involve years of work before I can put their concepts into action.

Best!
I've listened most of the non-spanking parenting books in an effort to raise a respectful, happy, and productive child. I came from a very strict and abusive background with no good example for doing this. I have listened lots of books that are theoretical, but when it comes to applying their recommendations, I am having trouble bridging the gap between what I was taught as a child and what I want for my kid. But this one is the best as works well.

Well explained book!
This is an incredibly well explained book! I now understand how to be a more effective parent, helping my kids grow to be capable and independent. I no longer engage in fights and power struggles. I wait to cool down before trying to figure out how to solve a problem with my kids. I take better care of myself, so I have more to give to my family. I have a better understanding of why I am the way that I am, and I've learned to appreciate others more for who they are. Our house is a much calmer and happier place!

I still feel that anyone with intense interest in their children will find that common sense wins out!
