Publisher's Summary

An ordinary outing takes Greta, Alex, and four-year-old Smilla across Sweden's mythical Lake Malice to a tiny, isolated island. While father and daughter tramp into the trees, Greta stays behind in the boat, lulled into a reverie by the misty, moody lake...only later to discover that the two haven't returned. Her frantic search proves futile. They've disappeared without a trace.

Greta struggles to understand their eerie vanishing. She desperately needs to call Alex, to be reassured that Smilla is safe, or contact the police. But now her cell phone is missing too. Back at her cottage, she finds it hidden away under the bedsheets. Had she done that? Or had someone else been in the cottage? But who, and why? As Greta struggles to put the pieces together, she fears that her past has come back to torment her, or she's finally lost her grip on reality...

In this dark psychological thrill ride - with more twists than a labyrinth and more breathless moments than a roller coaster - Greta must confront what she's always kept hidden if she has any hope of untangling the truth.

This book had a horrible narrator, to the point I couldn't continue on. This was a waste of money.

    "All Over The Place"

It seemed to me the author started this book with an idea that the first person character would be crazy and maybe a killer. Then about half way through the book she decides to take it in a whole other direction. It was not well organized and too long for what it was. Flashbacks didn't always make sense. Greta Missing time almost like a schizophrenic didn't make sense for her level of trauma. Way too long for no more plot or scene change. Character development wasn't great. I liked the end. About the last 4th of the book was good and well organized. It wasn't worth the reading the first 3/4ths though. It has rookie writer written all over it.

    "not really worth your time"

I'm no quitter so when I start something I finish it. This book was never very intriguing. And just really not impressive. I'm a huge mystery fan but this just really lacked the stuff that girl on a train and books like that have. I definitely cannot recommend this.

"you have to finish it for it to make sense!"

i think this must be one of the books where you either really love it, or you really hate it. the reviews are pretty polar opposite. i had a hard time following the story when i read it, but i purchased the audible in hopes that listening to it would make the story more clear to follow and interesting. it made all of the difference. i loved it! it really is one of those books in which you have to read the whole book for it to make sense...so all of the readers that DNF missed out on the information that made the initial 3/4 of the book seem nonsensical. the book was absolutely fantastic. the majority of the book is like a fever dream in which you know that you know what is happening...until you specifically think about it...then you realize nothing makes sense. only after the character perspectives change do things click into place.

a note on the narration by Tanya Eby. if listened to at regular speed, i could not handle her voice. i listened to it double speed, and it wasnt so bad then. initially i didnt think i could listen to the whole book because of it.

Intense. .. the slow, sometimes tortuous experience of the main character's thoughts had me examining my reactions all along the way .. good work.

    "Chilling read"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Missing to be better than the print version?

I don't know because I haven't read the print version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I can't say I exactly liked Greta, but I guess she was my favourite character if I had to pick one. Greta had a horrific childhood, which she didn't necessarily remember accurately. Her recent present life had it's own horrors which had me almost stop listening for good as they got really unpleasant (that's the exotic relationships part in the content warning). It's not exactly easy to skim past sections I don't like on audiobook as I do with a physical/ebook. But because I was desperate to know if there was a happy ending I kept going until the end, which managed to confuse me because I may have misunderstood what a character said to another (it could mean certain death which Greta miraculously avoided up to the end).

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Probably the end where some characters had a bit of relief.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    No idea, sorry.

    Any additional comments?

I must state I really loved this book, even if my initial comments may seem to hint the opposite. It was the most confusing read I've ever listened to/read. As someone who can struggle with concentrating because I read when I'm tired (any time of day), following a story with both multiple viewpoints and flashbacks made me thoroughly confused most of the time. I didn't know until the end whether Greta was hallucinating, having a mental breakdown, having cruel tricks played on her. I won't avoid similar reads in the future because I absolutely loved the way tidbits of necessary info was spread throughout the book. It was information that either confirmed my theories or simply confused me some more.

The narration was first class, I was completely immersed into the insanity of the characters and the plot. I think I will relisten to it eventually, after many fluffy listens-I was a bit disturbed emotionally by the end and had to placate the horrors with super cute gaming, as the topics are very hard hitting and made me sad for those whose live through similar goings on.

I received a copy from Audible in exchange for an honest review on my blog Nayu's Reading Corner

    "Slow and a little tedious"

This psychological thriller began with tinges of a David Lynch film, and finished with an inconclusive, fluffy conclusion. The lack of connected thoughts and plot made it difficult to concentrate - it makes some sense as it is supposed to be a reflection of the protagonist's mental state - however it was not well executed.

It's starting to get a little predictable with the abusive spouse story - this kind of storyline definitely needs a revamp. The performance was fine but the thriller was a little too drab.
