Story
Anwuli Okwudili prefers to be called AO. To her, these initials have always stood for Artificial Organism. AO has never really felt...natural, and that's putting it lightly. Her parents spent most of the days before she was born praying for her peaceful passing because even in-utero she was "wrong". But she lived. Then came the car accident years later that disabled her even further. Yet instead of viewing her strange body the way the world views it, as freakish, unnatural, even the work of the devil, AO embraces all that she is.

Story
This exciting collection presents two previously unpublished stories by SF legend Octavia E. Butler. A Necessary Being precedes the events of Survivor, Butler's third (famously disowned) installment in her Patternist series, and includes characters from it, focusing exclusively on the Kohn, aliens who build their social hierarchies on the blueness of their fur. In Childfinder, a black woman with the gift of identifying children with latent psychic ability refuses to share her skill with an organization of white telepaths.

Publisher's Summary
From the award-winning master of horror and Afrofuturism Tananarive Due comes a modern classic of dark introspection.
When Jessica marries David, he is everything she wants in a family man: brilliant, attentive, ever youthful. Yet she still feels something about him is just out of reach. Soon, as people close to Jessica begin to meet violent, mysterious deaths, David makes an unimaginable confession: More than 400 years ago, he and other members of an Ethiopian sect traded their humanity so they would never die, a secret he must protect at any cost. Now, his immortal brethren have decided David must return and leave his family in Miami. Instead, David vows to invoke a forbidden ritual to keep Jessica and his daughter with him forever.
Harrowing, engrossing, and skillfully rendered, My Soul to Keep traps Jessica between the desperation of immortals who want to rob her of her life and a husband who wants to rob her of her soul. With deft plotting and an unforgettable climax, this tour de force reminiscent of early Anne Rice will win Due a new legion of fans.

A Book I Can't Keep
I loved the Good House so much I wanted another book by the same author. I thought a book by the same author & a series too, I've got it made in my library.
Nope, I was wrong. This book is slow & a complete yawn! It's to busy, to many characters & I just couldn't keep up. I would drift off in my own mind because the story is just soooo slow, I missed pages of the story. It just couldn't hold my interest & tried so very hard to like it. I really did love the Good House so much, I wanted to love this book as well.
The narrator wasn't bad, but I wish the woman that narrated The Good House did this book too. Maybe, if she had done the narration it could have gotten me more into this story. Peter tends draw out the last word in every sentence too, and that part is extremely ANNOYING!! I just didn't care for Peter & how he TRIED to change his voice for the different characters.
I will be returning this book & looking for something that will keep me interest instead of keeping me falling asleep.
I was so disappointed too, because the reviews seemed so good...I guess it just comes down to expectations & personal tastes.
I recommend The Good House by the same author, but not this book.
I don't recommend the narrator.

Well Written Emotionally Charged
This book ran the spectrum of great story telling. It is in a setting of Black lives, culture, history, and sensuality among much more. The author's use of suspense left me anxious, breathless and holding on to unveil what was next. Sometimes I felt the segments of story went a little too detailed and took me away from the story. Overall I loved the book and enjoyed seeing myself alongside this family inside this author's visions. Well done Tananarive Due.

I still love it!!!
I have the immortal book series by Due and have enjoyed reading them years ago. So now having the audio versions is like a new adventure all over again, listening to the story from someone else's lips. I love her and hope that she connects with Jordan Peele and bring this book to life in a movie!!! I think he would do an amazing job bringing this story to the big screen, a 5 or 6 part mini series would be amazing! I'm allowed to dream.... aren't I!😊

Never disappointed!
This author is one of my favorite! I’ve enjoyed all of her books. If you’ve never read her work before, this is a great series to start with.
It took a while to get used to a male performing all of the voices but the story is so good, that ceased to be important.

Maybe it was the performance. This was suspenseful. I wanted to close my eyes and barely peek to see what would happen. But I can’t do that here, can I? This could be a beautiful, complex, thought provoking movie. Come on, Netflix!

Wonderful story
I've read this novel before and was just as captivated this time as I was the first. I was still brought to tears as I felt Jessica's pain. The only drawback is that there's a chapter missing in the audio book at the end of the novel. I would give it 0.5 less stars but I truly do enjoy this author and her works.

Long but layered and interesting
I skipped over several chapters until I reached the chapter where Alexis was calling her sister To come meet her in the parking lot. That’s when the story really picked up. Made for a great discussion group conversation along with biblical parallels.
