Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself. Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter - a family man with a successful consulting business - and his victim, a schoolteacher. Nor is there a hint of any possible motive for the attack.

Melissa Craig is absolutely delighted with her new life in an old crumbling cottage, spending her days pruning the primroses and getting to know Binkie, the ginger cat next door. She only wishes she had made the move to the countryside sooner. But when a knock at the door brings news of a shocking discovery, she suddenly finds herself thrown in to the middle of a baffling mystery: the bones of a young woman have been found in the woods just behind her new home. Perhaps the little village of Upper Bembury is not as idyllic as it first seemed? Strange phone calls in the night convince Melissa that the police are barking up completely the wrong tree, so she can’t resist doing a little digging of her own. From the bingo hall to the beauty salon and beyond, her search ruffles a few feathers and uncovers many of the village’s most scandalous secrets, but gets her no closer to finding the culprit.

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

Good book, but you say she's 92?
I enjoyed this book very much. I must be getting old because I was having trouble keeping track of the groups trying to acquire the property. I enjoyed Victoria's humor. Sweet old lady that she is. I really want to see the underground house. The whole book was very good and Davina Porter did a really great job of narrating.

Story and Accent
So I noticed complaints about the “British” Accent. And while the narration portions do sound very British, the Characters have very appropriate New England accents for the time period.
Now about the story. It has a slow and difficult pace. I also have a problem with the main characters manner toward her family I. The beginning. One can not want to be close to family and still chose to speak with respect. It doesn’t seem to match the “manners” of high-brow society at the time. I did not get past chapter 4 so her manners may have improved and I just don’t know it.

So many suspects. So very interesting the way the author leads the reader through the tangled web of family's divided, deceit, lust and murder. All untangled by a very gutsy and proper very old lady. Fun

refreshing
It was so nice to listen to a complete book without bad language. I hate and will not read or listen to books with the F word. The story was intriguing, funny at times, and surprising at the end. The narrator did a great job too.
