Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Couple Next Door, a new thriller featuring a suspicious accident, a wife who can't account for herself, and unsettling questions that threaten to tear the couple apart

You're home making dinner for your husband. You expect him any second.

The phone rings - it's the call you hoped you'd never get.

You jump in your car and race to a neighborhood you thought you'd never visit.

You peer into the dark, deserted building. You brace yourself for the worst.

And then, you remember nothing else.

They tell your husband you've been in an accident. You lost control of your car as you sped through the worst side of town.

The police suspect you were up to no good. But your husband refuses to believe it. Your best friend is not so sure. And even you don't know what to believe....

    "Wow! Just WOW!!"

The audiobook A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena. narrated by Tavia Gilbert is EXCELLENT! I was so excited when I found out Shari Lapena had a new book coming out because I loved The Couple Next Door. I pre-ordered A Stranger in the House...and waited...and waited! Finally, the day came when it was delivered to my Audible app...WooHoo! As I listened, I kept feeling like I had it all figured out. I wasn't sure if there was really an underlying mystery at all. I was still fully engaged in the well-written storyline, though, because new discoveries, twists, and turns continued to pop up at every corner. Needless to say, I WAS WRONG about everything, and the underlying mystery of it all came at me full force! The ending was awesome!!! Because of the ending, this book went from good to absolutely AMAZING! I'm still sitting in disbelief! I loved the characters, too. I'm dying to hear more about what happens next in their lives! Please, say we get a sequel to this book! :-)

The narration by Tavia Gilbert was perfect. I thought her performance was outstanding, all around! She was easy to listen to and made for a very enjoyable listening experience. I felt everything was right on....tone, inflection, volume, and pace. The way she would change from speaking to almost whisper-like, really kept me on the edge of my seat. I defintiely plan to check out more books she has narrated. Great work!

I'm sure it is no surprise that I give A Stranger in the House 5/5 stars. I am glad I loved The Couple Next Door so much because it had me eagerly wanting more from Shari Lapena! I thought my favorite of the two books was going to be The Couple Next Door, but after hearing the ending of A Stranger in the House, I really have no clue which one I enjoyed more. Both books are now listed in my Top 10 Favorites! I plan to buy every book from here on out by Shari Lapena, 100%! I recommend this book to those enjoy the Suspense/Thriller/Mystery genre. It's definitely one you don't want to miss out on!

Thank you so much for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. :-)

"I'll Buy Anything by Lapena Now!"

I thought her first book was good and had some surprising twists. This one was even better and still had twists I didn't expect. I can't find any fault in this story. The performance was very good. Tavia Gilbert does a good job of differentiating between male and female voices without unnecessarily lowering her voice too much. She's a little dramatic for my taste, but she that's understandable. Overall good recording.

"Great Sophomore Book from Shari Lapena"

I loved the premise of this book. A law abiding housewife has an out of character traffic accident. At the same time her husband comes home and finds her missing but her purse and cellphone are still there it looks like she left in a hurry or in a panic. The problem is the wife Karen now has amnesia and has no idea why she left the house and ended up in the terrible accident.
The story slowly starts to unravel with twist after twist right up to the thrilling conclusion. The character development is great as you learn that all parties involved have secrets.
I recommend this for fans of mystery/thrillers like Gone Girl, The Couple Next Door, I See You, I Let You Go, and The Girl On The Train.

"Couldn’t wait until it was over"

Everything irked me about this book. I didn’t find the writing to be good, the reader was exasperated and overly dramatic, and the story was expected. Will be avoiding this author and reader in the future.

    "Dull. Predictable"

Every mystery book writer seems to feel the need to come up with a twist (ooh!) to try to make their story unique. The problem is, now we expect the twist, and with this book it was so easy to figure out. It was almost like the writer used a “how to write a mystery book” template and plugged in the character names. The narrator did well with what she had, but overall the story was a huge waste of time.

    "Horribley narrated soap opera!"

Its hard to know where to start with the issues with this one. First, the narrator over emotes every discussion to the point where, when something really does happen, it seems the same as all the rest.

As for the plot and characters, none of them are very likable except maybe Tom, the husband of the main character.

The main character, Karen, gets into an accident and has no memory of it. That's not unusual based on normal head trauma. As the plot unfolds regarding the accident and what let up to it, the cops are absurd; the verbal interactions are overly repetitive and the same information is conveyed over and over. It gets old fast.

There is also the very annoying neighbor, Bridget, who is the classic bitter women who is unhappy with her life. She too is just absurd.

I barely got through it. The only reason I continued was other reviews saying the twist at the end was worth it. Its NOT!

    Don't waste your credit.

    "Waiting for something to happen...."

I got this book because I LOVED The Couple Next Door. This story started out with a great plot, however it became very stale. The “plot twists” were predictable, and the ending twist was good but not that exciting. The narrator of this book performed well for the women, but used the same voice for every man. The manner she spoke in was also quiet annoying as if everything she said was in a “matter of fact” way. It was a decent read but I expected more. :(

    "Just average"

This story was just an average listen. it was slow to start but with just enough where you think it HAS to get better.
it was OK but I didn't like the ending. I wish I had opted for another book.

    "Ugh"

I love a good housewife thriller. This was not that. The plot points were not only predictable but annoying. The characters didn't have depth and, therefore, neither did the story. The narration was OK although a little overly dramatic for my taste.
I tend to rate thriller novels based on how many times my mouth drops open or how many times I think "I didn't see that coming". This novel had none of those moments but about 10 to 15 eye rolls. What was supposed to be horrendous or daunting for the characters made me say "Oh, shut up!" several times. Very superficial and uninspired. Would not recommend.

    "BORING!"

This story reminds me of a detective movie from the 1940's--stilted dialogue and a predictable plot. Although there is a twist at the end, it's not enough to salvage the novel. Unfortunate choice for my Audible credit this month.
