Publisher's summary

She's blossomed from a wealthy surgeon's beautiful daughter to elegant socialite to being the top fashion stylist in the country. And Nora Mackenzie is only days away from marrying into one of New York's richest, most powerful families. But her fairy tale rise is rooted in an incredible deception - one scandal away from turning her perfect world to ashes....

What no one knows is that Nora is the biracial daughter of a Caribbean woman and a long-gone white father. Adopted - and abused - by her mother's employer, then sent to an exclusive boarding school to buy her silence, Nora found that "passing" as a white woman could give her everything she never had.

Now, an ex-classmate who Nora betrayed many years ago has returned to her life to even the score. Her machinations are turning Nora's privilege into one gilded trap after another. Running out of choices, Nora must decide how far she will go to protect a lie or give up and finally face the truth.

Critic reviews

"A winding story full of secrets, betrayal, revenge, and love." (Rena Olsen, author of The Girl Before)
"Blades has created a heroine both honorable and deceptive, both vulnerable and powerful, a heroine whose choices are at times shocking but arguably necessary." (Holly Chamberlin, author of The Season of Us)

Great book, strange narration.

I loved the story, Nora was appealing and I felt for her. I wanted her to keep her secret at all costs. As soon as the “trouble” entered the story all I could think was “someone has to die” and I saw no other route for things to work out. If a child who was abused and lost her only protection and loved one in the world, has to twist a few knives to keep herself thriving as an adult then so be it. The narrator dropped her accents at times and sometimes forgot to switch accents during dialogue scenes between the varying characters. Her “ethnic” accents were also just shy of offensive stereotypes.

Facts Are Not Friendly

Nora MacKenzie has it all, slamming career and is engaged to one of NY richest bachelor. So, why is she freaking out?
I wanted to bond with Nora, but she was never genuine. I wanted to have compassion for her childhood, but she carried her “victim” like it was an expensive purse.
Ms. Blades left me with several unanswered questions. But, I did enjoy this book.
