Publisher's Summary

Venus Johnston has a great job and a long-term, live-in boyfriend who happens to be a drop-dead gorgeous doctor. She also has a weekly beauty-parlor date to keep her long, nappy hair slick and straight. But the tedious hours and harsh chemicals in the salon have long grated on Venus. One frustrating day, she trades in the long hair for a dramatically short, natural cut and sends her commitment-balking boyfriend packing. It's a bold declaration of independence and one that has effects she never could have imagined. Reactions from friends and coworkers range from concern to contempt to outright condemnation. When her ex starts dating a voluptuous, long-haired beauty, Venus is forced to question what she really wants out of life. With wit, resilience, and determination, Venus finally learns what true happiness is, on her own terms.

Critic Reviews

"Thomas offers painful but amusing insights into the politics of beauty, black culture, and male-female relationships; her first novel places her in a league with Terry MacMillan and Bebe Moore Campbell." ( Booklist)
"Empowering....Thomas refuses to let her characters slide into stereotype, and she keeps the pace fast and funny." ( Publishers Weekly)

Great

This was a good read because even though I listened, the narrator did such a good job that I feel like I read it word for word. Anyway, I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters. I also enjoyed the life lesson. Sometimes when u snooze, u loose. Keep up the good work

Worth a Listen

I loved the message, but there's are many moments where I lost interest and had to rewind. It didn't end as I'd hoped either. Overall though I found it to be worth the listen.

Bad

This is one of the worst written books I've ever read. Oh boy was it bad. Jumped all over the place, random backstory for side characters. Things that were problems that didn't really make sense. It was BAD. As someone that just cut off my own hair less than a year ago I really wanted to relate to this, but it was garbage.

if only book 2 were available on this platform

Like many people, I enjoy reading books before they are turned into movies. Lately I've been preferring audiobooks to regular. Too bad Audible does not have the second book "Would I Lie to You". Kind of disappointing that they have books 1,3, and 4 available but not 2.

Love yourself before you can love someone else.

This book shows that no matter how you decorate the outer you it can never fix the insecurities within yourself.

Not my favorite book...

Struggle to finish.... the performance did not help the flat characters. The story was predictable and disappointing. The Book included too many characters and not enough development of a strong story.

entertainment

I enjoyed the narrator's accent. I like how she used different tones for each character. I enjoyed how she sang the needed parts as well.. The book itself is good.

Subpar

Unfortunately, there was not much substance to this book. Predictable and disappointing. I thought there would be some life lessons, but it seemed more like bad decisions and fluff.

I get what she was trying to do

After looking at the other reviews I guess I’m in the minority. This book has been suggested by audible based on my other books. I then saw the trailer for the movie that’s coming out in a few weeks so I thought I’d give it a chance. I even selected it for my book club so we could compare the book with the movie. That being said I was kind of disappointed in the book. For me I get what the author was trying to say. ‘You have to love yourself before anyone else can love you.’ It seemed that V cutting her hair only played a small part in herself discovery. The story could have taken place with or with out this element. The story had too many characters and things going on. The story spent too much time on Candie and her backstory. And what was the point of Rey and Tyson? The way their story lines were written did not serve a purpose. They could have served a bigger part in V’s self discovery. Like I said I was disappointed. I hope the movie is better.

Movie Preview Caught my Attention!

I decided to download this book only after having seen the previews of the upcoming movie. I am elated that I spent the money. It was a refreshing look into the struggle of an African American women in the corporate & "Free" arena. I really enjoyed watching as Venus grew from an insecure "college student" to an adult who could love and give real love. I am paitently waiting for the movie.
