Publisher's Summary

Venus Johnston has a great job and a long-term, live-in boyfriend who happens to be a drop-dead gorgeous doctor. She also has a weekly beauty-parlor date to keep her long, nappy hair slick and straight. But the tedious hours and harsh chemicals in the salon have long grated on Venus. One frustrating day, she trades in the long hair for a dramatically short, natural cut and sends her commitment-balking boyfriend packing. It's a bold declaration of independence and one that has effects she never could have imagined. Reactions from friends and coworkers range from concern to contempt to outright condemnation. When her ex starts dating a voluptuous, long-haired beauty, Venus is forced to question what she really wants out of life. With wit, resilience, and determination, Venus finally learns what true happiness is, on her own terms.

Critic Reviews

"Thomas offers painful but amusing insights into the politics of beauty, black culture, and male-female relationships; her first novel places her in a league with Terry MacMillan and Bebe Moore Campbell." ( Booklist)
"Empowering....Thomas refuses to let her characters slide into stereotype, and she keeps the pace fast and funny." ( Publishers Weekly)

Great

This was a good read because even though I listened, the narrator did such a good job that I feel like I read it word for word. Anyway, I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters. I also enjoyed the life lesson. Sometimes when u snooze, u loose. Keep up the good work

Glad I read the book

Saw the short film on this book via NETFLIX and wish I’d read the book prior. The book was so much better as I feel the movie didn’t reflect the characters correctly. Great read for sure and I loved the message behind it. Wish the ending was different but it all worked out for everyone.

Better than the movie!

Listening to this book ws amazing! Definitely better than the movie on netflix, they definitely missed several crucial moments in Venus' character development. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Great listen

Good writing and narration. Story line was interesting. Not the ending I was hoping for, but still good.

Stereotypical Characters

I found the characters to be stereotypical and poorly developed. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either.

Bad

This is one of the worst written books I've ever read. Oh boy was it bad. Jumped all over the place, random backstory for side characters. Things that were problems that didn't really make sense. It was BAD. As someone that just cut off my own hair less than a year ago I really wanted to relate to this, but it was garbage.

if only book 2 were available on this platform

Like many people, I enjoy reading books before they are turned into movies. Lately I've been preferring audiobooks to regular. Too bad Audible does not have the second book "Would I Lie to You". Kind of disappointing that they have books 1,3, and 4 available but not 2.

Love yourself before you can love someone else.

This book shows that no matter how you decorate the outer you it can never fix the insecurities within yourself.
