Publisher's summary

The Strategic Career provides listeners with the ultimate guide to career choices, both short term and long term. While other authors approach career development from the perspective of psychology and counseling, Bill Barnett demonstrates how business strategy concepts can successfully guide us as we chart our careers.

Drawing on two decades of experience leading McKinsey & Company's strategy practice as well as his popular Career Strategy courses at Yale and Rice University, he approaches the construction of a long-term career plan by looking at the main challenges professionals will face: developing and reaching long-term targets, surfacing opportunities, assessing career decisions, and staying on track. The Strategic Career is the ideal companion on your professional pathway.

A strategic approach to career change

I approached this book from both a military and an MBA professional mindset. There is sage advice in here for any professional. But I wish I could force every Army Soldier to read this book when they entered the military. Barnett approaches things with a well defined strategy that is applicable to both military and civilian life. However, Barnett's approach is particularly relevant to military because almost all of them will have to make a transition into a new career at some point. Having an early grasp of his principles and strategy would go a long way to keep any veteran from being unemployed or underemployed.
