We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

While human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember 20 years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter for your children?

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Publisher's summary
From the New York Times best-selling author of Great by Choice comes an authoritative, practical guide to individual performance - based on analysis from an exhaustive, groundbreaking study.
Why do some people perform better at work than others? This deceptively simple question continues to confound professionals in all sectors of the workforce. Now, after a unique, five-year study of more than 5,000 managers and employees, Morten Hansen reveals the answers in his "Seven Work Smarter Practices" that can be applied by anyone looking to maximize their time and performance.
Each of Hansen's seven practices is highlighted by inspiring stories from individuals in his comprehensive study. You'll meet a high school principal who engineered a dramatic turnaround of his failing high school; a rural Indian farmer determined to establish a better way of life for women in his village; and a sushi chef whose simple preparation has led to his restaurant (tucked away under a Tokyo subway station underpass) being awarded the maximum of three Michelin stars. Hansen also explains how the way Alfred Hitchcock filmed Psycho and the 1911 race to become the first explorer to reach the South Pole both illustrate the use of his seven practices (even before they were identified).
Each chapter contains questions and key insights to allow you to assess your own performance and figure out your work strengths as well as your weaknesses. Once you understand your individual style, there are clear tips to assist your focus on a strategy to become a more productive worker. Extensive, accessible, and friendly, Great at Work will help you achieve more by working less, backed by unprecedented statistical analysis.

We've all had experiences with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

Great practical advice based on current research
The findings from Hansen’s research are very encouraging, fully supporting the work smart not hard philosophy. But there are a lot of facets to this as the research uncovers making this book a very worthwhile listen.

Awesome overall rating
This book was highly recommended and as I started listening I was not overly impressed. However as I listened further I was very interested to hear the important messages shared by the author. The stories and examples shared resonated with me and my crusade to be a better worker and leader in my profession. I feel very blessed to have listened to the end and I feel I am and will be a better team player for reading and applying what is learned in this book.

A good book. The ideas are not really new though
This is a good book to listen. It starts with a story about the author’s colleague who could do work better than him with less time, and the whole book is about how to do better with less time. The most important rule is that don’t take too many responsibilities, but instead do a few selected and really focus on them. These are good ideas. When I got too busy in working, I would think about the book and think about ways to cut the workload, so it’s useful.
However, the book presents the way like all its ideas are something new, something different, but they are not. I’ve listened to similar ideas before, but it is good to listen again.

You will be able to pick out some good advice
The beginning has good insights. Afterwards, once it comes to teams, the author is selling his findings too hard, but reading through Google's project Oxygen gives you more convincing principles.
But overall, I recommend, especially the first four or five principles. Listening was worth it.
