At the time, I remember thinking, “She has patience,” and while that was true, as I now reflect on that incident, I realize how much impact those words and that gesture actually had on me. Later, as a high school teacher myself, I, too, often wrote inspirational quotes on the board for my students.

In preparing this book, I researched to make sure I had the correct wording for each entry and cited the original author whenever possible. I never had researched the quote that influenced me so; in fact, I had never even written it down. I found out that “They also serve who only stand and wait” was written by John Donne, and, while the line does imply the necessity of patience, more correctly, the poet is reflecting that his blindness has made him realize that he still had a place in God’s world despite his disability.

Also in my recent research, I found that “binding time” is actually a misnomer; the correct wording is actually “time-binding”, which is "the characteristically human activity of transmitting experience from one generation to another".

While still in high school, I got a blank book and started keeping expressions, quotes, sayings, and poems that appealed to me. Today, as I read over my book (now three-fourths full) and all the scraps of paper lying in a box that may or may not ever make it into the book, I find that the quotes I chose that made it into my book are a reflection of the various stages of my life - young adulthood, marriage, children, career. I have tried to put into this work the quotes which I feel are most powerful and universal. The entries reflect on seven aspects of life: finding meaning or Purpose, attitude, change, happiness, success, relationships, time.
