Good bones, good story, needs a decent editor
Simon Vance was great; a lot of voices to act, and well done overall. The story is great, enjoyable to listen to, lots of action and a cool world to visit; I bought both sequels on strength of the first one. However there are some simple but irritating mistakes around comtinuity, awkward grammar, flawed and weak connections made that stretched credibility; a lot that could have been fixed with better editing. But hey it’s fiction, and I do care about the characters, so it worked for me. Overall I’m glad I listened,

Too much manufactured drama
There is such a thing as too much drama. Like soap operas like "The young and the restless" or "Dynasty", or "Dallas", the author seemed more intent on dragging this story out unnecessarily by manufacturing drama when none was necessary if just a little common sense was applied. This is the source of the frustration many are expressing here and in my opinion, it ruins a potentially great story that could have been much greater if it was less overtly dramatic.
I hope the author tones down the drama in future versions of this book.

Get sick of kale dying.
It seems that Kale the hero of the book dies about every other chapter. At this point I know he’s going to die and I know he’s going to get resurrected. And the same goes for his wife.
