Publisher's summary

When creatures that lurk in the dark dare to venture out into the world, lives are changed forever.

Conrad lives a quiet rural life with his parents in the Northlands. During one fated night, his world is turned on its head, as nightmares become reality. While his Northlands blood cries out for revenge, Conrad’s head tells him surviving is the best he can do.

Rescued by a motley band of mercenaries, Conrad embarks on a life he could barely have imagined. As new challenges, friends, and enemies present themselves, Conrad knows that one day he will have to face the evil that so altered his life, and when that day comes, he must be ready.

Similar Feel to Wolf of North + Society of Sword

Narration - Threw me off at first, as nearly all the accents are thick and some were hard to tell apart, but by then end the characters feel familiar.

Plot - At first it seemed like another "bad guy gets powerful magical artifact that lets him do anything," but gladly it took a bit of a different turn as more of the plot unfolds. It felt less gripping than some of Hamilton's other titles, but less action/suspense now set us up for more character and plot development down the line.

Characters - Unlike most fantasy series, by the end of book 1 the main character still feels like an average guy in extraordinary circumstances, with one exceptional ability but nothing overpowered. I hope this continues even as the character grows into his own more! Backstory is minimal for everyone other than the MC, but there is significant development of the overall Middle Sea world's history (for everyone who's read Hamilton's other titles).

Overall - Definitely worth it for readers new to the Middle Sea or those already familiar with Hamilton's world, but don't expect to be swept up quite as quickly as some of his other titles.

Well Done.

Took a flier on this book and in glad a did. Pacing is good. The author doesnt overwhelm you with 35 different characters in the beginning which I appreciated.

Young boy goes on adventures

I was hoping for a more original world, but it's the usual "sell swords" and coming of age story. It does hold the interest, bizarrely despite the obvious copies of Harry Potter (young boy goes to school, bullying, and adventures with a little magic) and Game of Throne "icy bad guys" (won't say more and be a spoiler). The Intelligensia should have a different name since she's not very intelligent--more like a typical cope going through the motions-rather than thinking outside the box. Thank goodness for a 14 year old boy who can!
A good beach read.

Not Hamilton’s best

I’ve read most of the authors books and found them enjoyable, this was by far his worst showing. Story dragged on, the narrators accents were atrocious, overall very poor quality. I hope he ends the series now before it gets any worse.

John Lee was great!

Great world introduction - I can see it going in multiple directions. Kudos for snagging John Lee to read!

looking forward to more

Other than and ending that was slightly anticlimactic the story was great.
John Lee is one of the best narrators out there. I'd recommend the book on that alone.

Very Very Frustrating

If you are excited to read a book about a weakling 12 year old MC that runs from danger and literally pisses his pants in terror and freezes when in danger then this book is for you. Who wants to read or listen to that?

Save your coin or credit

Start with a good John Lee's performance is voice Actor Is always great. But the story Meanders along with no character development. No sense of world development for a fantasy world . Contradictory Plotlines And an abrupt ending that leaves you saying Uh-huh

Good start, abrupt end

Overall enjoyed it but ended just when it was getting good. The story overall feels very grounded, nearly low fantasy, but the magic is there.

Clean Language

It is refreshing to find a great listen that does not require perverse language to make a point or enhance a story.

The characters' morales on display inspire me to be a better man. To simply do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.
