Publisher's Summary

As a follow up to her two best-selling books, Bittersweet and Cold Tangerines, author and blogger Shauna Niequist returns with the perfect listen for those who love food and value the community and connection of family and friends around the table.

Bread & Wine is a collection of essays about family relationships, friendships, and the meals that bring us together. This mix of Anne Lamott and Barefoot Contessa is a funny, honest, and vulnerable spiritual memoir. Bread & Wine is a celebration of food shared, reminding listeners of the joy found in a life around the table. It’s about the ways God teaches and nourishes people as they nourish the people around them. It’s about hunger, both physical and otherwise, and the connections between the two.

With wonderful recipes included, from Bacon-Wrapped Dates to Mango Chicken Curry to Blueberry Crisp, listeners will be able to recreate the comforting and satisfying meals that come to life in Bread & Wine.

Met Shauna at Life Today

This book is every bit as delightful and refreshing as my brief encounter was with Shauna. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Touching stories

I have enjoyed listening to Shauna's new podcast, and decided to "hear" her book. I caught myself smiling, laughing, and even shedding a tear at times. Her book is a wonderful compilation of short stories about normal, messy life...and food!

So. Very. Good.

Sometimes I had to stop between chapters to let the beautiful story sink in. I felt as if I was listening to a friend tell her life story.

A Metaphor We Live By

What made the experience of listening to Bread & Wine the most enjoyable?

Shauna tells stories the way Jesus tells parables. She pushes me to think deeply and every time I come back to listen to her, I think she is right next to me just talking about the day.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bread & Wine?

Shauna ends books incredibly well. "This is what I want you to do: I want you to tell someone you love them, and dinner’s at six. I want you to throw open your front door and welcome the people you love into the inevitable mess with hugs and laughter." This is her charge to us and we must be ready to accept.

What does Shauna Niequist bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Shauna's encouraging truth-telling and vocal tone makes her an incredible storyteller.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"Every table is a communion table."

Enjoyed the Ride!

Would you listen to Bread & Wine again? Why?

I will read Bread and Wine again as well as suggest others read it as well. With the author as the reader, I was able to sense her appeal for good food, wine and friendship. This book inspires me to try her favorite recipes as well as create a group that would enjoy cooking, eating and drinking wine together!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bread & Wine?

Shauna's friendships and the way they cared for one another

Have you listened to any of Shauna Niequist’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When she said she was very shy about inviting people over, then just began with simply providing pizza, not worrying about the food so much. Then she starts reading cookbooks and selecting things to try, to get out of her comfort zone. Then we find out how much fun she has in using recipes to put her own spark or touch on them without hesitation and encourages us to just "try" it!

Any additional comments?

Shauna's voice and passion for food and friendship is contagious!
