Publisher's summary

This chilling, shocking, interesting, and intriguing true story takes you deep into the mind of the author who suffers from several severe mental illnesses.

The author describes in detail all the insanity, disturbing behaviors, oppressive symptoms, and various feeling associated with the mental battles within her own mind. The author suffers from clinical depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and borderline personality disorder. She struggles with suicidal thoughts and attempts, self-mutilating behaviors, mania, paranoia, anxiety, and psychosis with intense hallucinations of all five of her senses, and multiple delusions, including the belief that she is the "second-coming of Christ".

Take this journey with the author as her life takes rapid turns for the very worst.... But after years of being extremely mentally unstable, she acquires the courage, strength, hope, and faith she needs to understand, accept, and live with her illnesses. Only then is she able to turn her once miserable and fearful life around. This book offers hope and inspiration to others as it proves that recovery from mental illness is possible. "Having a mental illness is like a roller coaster ride. You don't jump off while it's still moving. You have to continue to ride until it comes to a complete stop and you can get off safely".

Excellent Book

This book has mirrored my life so much and in so many ways! I have a lot of the same issues that manifests differently but there are so many things that I can relate to! I'm a student of Psychology now and there are so many mistakes that have been made in the early days but now I believe that they're correcting a lot of it! I know that there is a lot further progress in this area but with people like Stephanie telling her story and getting people to understand the difficulties thi population has we will be well on our way!

me too

I related strongly to what she shared in this book. Like her, I wanted to become a doctor, but my depression had other ideas. She studied psychology in order to help others with mental illness and I studied addiction counseling. She was a case manager while I tried to work at an apartment building for people with mental illness. I cried myself out of the job. Yet, I still want to help others especially Christians with mental illness.

Sad Reality of navigating mental illness

I liked the honesty of the author in looking back on the many obstacles to overcome throughout her life to finally live a life of hope and happiness. It’s truly a traumatic life of not knowing what will work for each individual medically, socially, emotionally etc. The life of so many losses and struggles.

Brave and honest author

Thank you for being so open about such a sensitive topic and area of your life. The detailed description of your inner world, your feelings of its authenticity, and your devastating hopelessness painted such a vivid picture of this often misunderstood illness. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing more about mental illnesses. Your realization that you’re not the cause of your illness is a blessing. Medications and therapy are necessary to control mental illness. It is sad that it took so long for your recovery. I received this audio book free with the promise of an honest review. This is what I have written, honest and heartfelt.

Very candid and detailed memoir

Stephanie Anne Allen's brave and candid memoir was very compelling to me to listen to. Lorri Heneveld did a great job of narrating, too. As someone with schizoaffective disorder, myself, I was delighted to find this, a rare memoir by someone with the same illness. I listened to it, after listening to the author's book on Audible, "How to Survive Schizoaffective Disorder," as I am trying to learn as much as I can about this illness. I empathized with some of what she wrote in this memoir, though my personal story does differ from hers, of course. A commonality we have is that we believed things that weren't true, when psychotic. I do recommend this book, especially if you are interested in what experiencing schizoaffective disorder is like.

A Journey from Illness to Healing

This story was the most heartfelt, knowledgeable and detailed account of mental illness I have ever read!! At first because of detail of lesbian sexual encounters it turned me off as I am a Christian! And believe in marriage between man and woman only! But I continued reading because it truly revealed the real world of acute mental illness or schzophrenia! As my father also suffered from this horrendous disease. It also describes how the political and legal systems have caused more suffering for the mentally ill by closing needed hospitals and putting them on the streets and in jails! Where they definitely don't belong! I also continued reading because the author kept saying she believed in God and I hoped she would give her life truly to him? And in the end she found out that our Lord and Savior, is the true giver of peace, happiness, life and love. And with his help she returned to those who truly loved her, friends and family! Such a truly inspiring and raw story with real emotion and suffering! But resulting in a life worth living and a real HERO!
