Story
The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention. In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth.

Story
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my audiobook, Yearbook for websites and shit like that, so...here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like.

Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At 17 she's already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you. Every new scar hardens Charlie's heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

Publisher's summary
National Best Seller
An up-close portrait of the mind of an addict and a life unraveled by narcotics - a memoir of captivating urgency and surprising humor that puts a human face on the opioid crisis.
“Raw, brutal, and shocking. Move over, Orange Is the New Black.” (Amy Dresner, author of My Fair Junkie)
When word got out that Tiffany Jenkins was withdrawing from opiates on the floor of a jail cell, people in her town were shocked. Not because of the 20 felonies she’d committed, or the nature of her crimes, or even that she’d been captain of the high school cheerleading squad just a few years earlier, but because her boyfriend was a Deputy Sherriff, and his friends - their friends - were the ones who’d arrested her.
A raw and twisty, pause resisting memoir that sounds like fiction, High Achiever spans Tiffany’s life as an active opioid addict, her 120 days in a Florida jail where every officer despised what she’d done to their brother in blue, and her eventual recovery. With heart-racing urgency and unflinching honesty, Jenkins takes you inside the grips of addiction and the desperate decisions it breeds. She is a born storyteller who lived an incredible story, from blackmail by an ex-boyfriend to a soul-shattering deal with a drug dealer, and her telling brims with suspense and unexpected wit. But the true surprise is her path to recovery. Tiffany breaks through the stigma and silence to offer hope and inspiration to anyone battling the disease - whether it’s a loved one or themselves.
Critic reviews
“Raw, brutal and shocking. Move over, Orange Is the New Black. There’s a new bitch in town.” (Amy Dresner, author of My Fair Junkie)
“A great read for fans of Orange is the New Black, this national bestseller provides a shocking and propulsive look into the life of an addict.... Jenkins breaks down the stigma around drug addiction and recovery in her first book, giving readers a story that is both joyous and heartbreaking.” (BookBub)

I Get it, You Were an Addict
I've been in recovery for 32 years and I applaud Ms. Jenkins on turning her life around. But, my God, to go through every excruciating detail of her usage and then focus so little on her recovery? Just not for me. The miracle of getting sober is what it is complicated, hard to describe and incredibly beneficial for a wider audience to understand. Relating the behavior that leads to sobriety is mostly dull as toast, repetitive and indulgent. That is certainly the case here. Every addict thinks their story is so UNIQUE, hate to say it, we're all pretty much the same plateful of problems and hijinks.

Highly inspirational !
The audio version of this book is incredible! Having the author narrate makes the experience more meaningful. Tiffany has a unique down to earth personality and listening to her tell her story in her own voice was quite moving. While based largely on her substance abuse and the path of destruction it took her on this book is for everyone not just those in recovery. She addresses the life events that prompted her into stepping into the world of alcohol and substance abuse, which include depression and anxiety. The author inspires the reader to get out of their comfort zones and embrace their awkwardness!! I highly recommend this book!

So so bad
This has got to be one of the worst books I have read in a long time. I listened to the audiobook, read by the author, and could barely stand to listen for 10 mins at a time. I could write an essay on why not to read this book, but here are the main issues:
1. Never mind the fact that she would take 5 full mins to build up to an extremely predictable and anticlimactic event, the actual writing led me to believe that no one bothered to proofread or edit this book. There are basic, elementary school errors throughout.
2. The whole thing is written without any contractions, and narrated the same way (“I will go to the store and I will return soon” instead of “I’m going to the store and I’ll be right back” —- no one speaks like that. It felt awkward and unrealistic.
3. In the narration, she attempts to do the voices of several black correctional officers and prisoners - it’s extremely offensive sounding and unnecessary.
4. No one is more impressed by this lady than herself, as she repeatedly pats herself on the back throughout (see end of book where she describes over and over how much applause she got in her mediocre speech)
5. The actual STORY is boring and no different from any other story of any other addict you’ve experienced or heard about. The title and summary make it sound like it’s this wild take — spoiler, it’s not. Drug addict lies cheats steals from people she loves, goes to jail and rehab, end of story. No interesting twists or things that make this a story worth telling. Just because you’re an addict doesn’t mean you need to write a book.

Cringeworthy
I’ve been reading for a long time and this is the worst “writing” I’ve encountered outside of my college fiction courses. Clumsy, lazy sentence construction riddled with cliche after cliche. Awkward use of vulgar language. And a tedious description of her time in jail. I stopped after 10 pages or so, and returned my audio book for something better, by which I mean anything else.

Brilliant in depth back story of one woman's fight
I'll start with thanking you Tiff for being so open with readers. I would suggest this to anyone either fighting addiction or dealing with someone close who's an addict. tiff you had a hard road, but thankfully you found the help you needed, and accepted it. ive personally never had addiction issues, but have helped many friends with their fight. you bared it all, and I enjoyed that you didn't hold back. if your story could help just one person to know it's not the end, and that they can overcome this monster then you have achieved more than most. I hope that those you hurt hear this, and in their own way can forgive you. I don't even know you, and I'm very proud of you. I sometimes catch your live chats, and always think we would be great friends.
you're book is the first audio book I listened to, and finished. most tend to bore me. so well done on that as well lol. enjoy your life as you are.

Amazing
Absolutely amazing! Really well told, it’s draws you in and makes you want to listen.. it’s funny, scary, interesting and most of all.. real. She really went through all of this. I respect her more than I did before, if that’s even possible!

Raw, honest & moving
Wow! What an incredible story!
The way Tiffany tells her story is raw, honest and full of emotion. You can hear how difficult it must be for her, even all these years later. Thank you for being so brave and never giving up x

Intriguing, personal, but a bit hard to follow
Enjoyed the openness Tiffany has as she shared her story. I did find it a bit hard to follow with the time shifts (from present to past and back again), which might be easier to follow in print.

Self indulgent
Really disliked this character/author. She takes no responsibility for her own bad choices and behaviour.

It's 1924 in Branchville, South Carolina, and three women have come to a crossroads. Gertrude, a mother of four, must make an unconscionable decision to save her daughters. Annie, the matriarch of the influential Coles family, offers Gertrude employment at her sewing circle, while facing problems of her own at home.
