Publisher's summary

India Steele is desperate. Her father is dead, her fiancé took her inheritance, and no one will employ her, despite years working for her watchmaker father. Indeed, the other London watchmakers seem frightened of her. Alone, poor, and at the end of her tether, India takes employment with the only person who'll accept her - an enigmatic and mysterious man from America, a man who possesses a strange watch that rejuvenates him when he's ill. Matthew Glass must find a particular watchmaker, but he won't tell India why any old one won't do. Nor will he tell her what he does back home, and how he can afford to stay in a house in one of London's best streets. So when she reads about an American outlaw known as the Dark Rider arriving in England, she suspects Mr. Glass is the fugitive. When danger comes to their door, she's certain of it. But if she notifies the authorities, she'll find herself unemployed and homeless again - and she will have betrayed the man who saved her life. With a cast of quirky characters, an intriguing mystery, and a dash of romance, The Watchmaker's Daughter is the start of a thrilling new historical fantasy series from the author of the best-selling Ministry of Curiosities, Freak House, and the Emily Chambers Spirit Medium books.

Could Be Less

I was given this book via audiobook boom, I felt like I was listening to War and Peace. there was so much unnecessary detail. The story just kept going and going. I listened to the book and there were so many places where I did not know if they were talking or thinking. The story is a strong story but could have been done in less time than it took to do it. I can't imagine more books that drag like this one. The whole gambling scene took so much time I started yawning. I can't say I enjoyed this one.

Great Start to an addictive Series

Would you listen to The Watchmaker's Daughter again? Why?

Yes, this was a great listen, the narrator did a superb job with all the voices and accents.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I truly never considered the art of watchmaking all that fascinating. However, this book incorporated history, craftsmanship and enough mystery to keep you guessing.

What about Emma Powell’s performance did you like?

The author left a little bit too much of a cliff hanger for me. I have quite a few unanswered questions that I feel could have been acknowledged prior to the conclusion, rather than waiting for the following installment.

If you could rename The Watchmaker's Daughter, what would you call it?

Nothing, it was great!

Loved the story but the narator wasn't up to par

I really enjoyed this story. I had no trouble connecting with the character Ms. Steele. The narrator couldn't quite do the other accents well so I had to get over that. I didn't feel it ruined the book for me like others have stated. I look forward to listening to the next book.

Steampunk at its best

No vampires. No fullblown automatrons or out of control magic. No ridiculous blown out of proportion sexual desires.

Just almost real life with a touch of magic. A slowly developing love between two people.

I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Good beginning to series

I enjoyed the time period; the characters, their development, the story and the infusion of magic. The ending was rather abrupt. I hope to see these characters return.

Weak female lead!!

The story is interesting but the lead character in her books is such a weak, helpless female that has to be ‘saved’ by the strong, handsome hero.
It would be refreshing if she actually wrote a character who could show that women can be intelligent and competent!

overall good book

The book flowed really well. I would personally classify this book as a historical romance fantasy mystery. I love all the characters, even love the aunt, and what she says in chapter 8. Personally, I didn't care for the narrator, but other than overall a good book.

Refreshing

The narrator did a very good job with the different characters’ voices. Atmosphere of the time period a fair attempt.
Looking forward to the other books in the series.

A Captivating Novel

The story, while a little thin in spots, and a bit heavy with Victoriana, kept me interested throughout. I look forward to the next one
