Publisher's summary

Coming home dredges up deeply buried secrets in The Survivors, a thrilling mystery by New York Times best-selling author Jane Harper.

Kieran Elliott's life changed forever on the day a reckless mistake led to devastating consequences.

The guilt that still haunts him resurfaces during a visit with his young family to the small coastal community he once called home.

Kieran's parents are struggling in a town where fortunes are forged by the sea. Between them all is his absent brother, Finn.

When a body is discovered on the beach, long-held secrets threaten to emerge. A sunken wreck, a missing girl, and questions that have never washed away....

A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books

"[Harper is] a master at creating atmospheric settings, and it’s easy to fall under her spell.... A layered and nuanced mystery.” (Kirkus)

“As always, Harper skillfully evokes the landscape as she weaves a complicated, elegant web, full of long-buried secrets ready to come to light.” (New York Times Book Review)

Jane Harper did again

This author has become one of my favorites. And Stephen Shanahan narration is amazing...again. This book was just released yesterday and already, I can’t wait for the next one. I have listened to the previous 3 books twice, and I will be listening to this one again.

Best Psychological Thriller in past year

The isolated Tasmania coast community was rocked by a tragic storm 12 years earlier. Now grief and guilt from those events boil over setting family against family and friend against friend. The Survivors started more slowly than previous books by Jane Harper. But as I got through it I realized this gave her the time to peel back the layers of the characters more dramatically. This built to one of her most riveting endings yet and made it all worthwhile.

Too many characters to keep track of.

Audio loudness/volume was lower than normal. Too many characters to keep track of. Story started very slow.

Volume issues

The narration is good, but often the narrator’s voice drops to an inaudible level. This is especially problematic when you’re unable to increase the volume on your device. Lots of rewinding back to hear what was missed!

I love Jane Harper

This was another great story. However the reader was hard to hear and understand with his accent. Volume was on high and it was like he was whispering.

Hauntingly vivid

Harper paints a vivid picture of a small coastal town in Tasmania and the modern struggles of who stays and who leaves for university and bigger cities. Trigger warning for those with concerns around drowning and caves.

Outstanding

I waited several months for this book to come out. I think Jane Harper is a literary marvel. Her depth of human motivation places her apart from other mystery novelists. Wow, read this book.

Good thriller

This book has an interesting take on a murder mystery. However it is very slow. It really focuses on the back stories, almost too much, outlining the characters very in depth. The last chapters is when it gets good. You almost can skip half the book and read the end and still understand what is happening.
