Story
Claire Carmichael leads a charmed life. She has two beautiful sons, Jamie and Joshua, and a handsome and successful husband who loves her. Even when she was in school, Claire had it all. She was clever, likeable, and after passing the initiation tests, she was welcomed into the society of popular girls - the Queen Bees. So when a scandal threatened to ruin Claire's reputation, the Queen Bees closed rank to protect her, no matter who else got hurt. Claire may have moved on from her school days, but for one person who she hurt irreparably, those memories are as fresh as blood.

Story
She’s the shoulder you cry on when the father of your children disappears. She’s the person you turn to when he comes back, begging for forgiveness. She’s by your side when you discover his guilty secrets. She helps rock your babies to sleep when they cry. She’s your friend when you have no one else. She’s the woman upstairs, whose feet you hear treading above as you drift off at night, thankful you aren’t alone.

It’s been 25 years since Emma graduated from the prestigious Denham House Girls’ School. She thinks she’s finally shaken the shadow of the awkward, neurotic girl she was at school. But as a class reunion approaches, Emma finds herself right back there, moving into the headmaster’s old staff cottage with her daughter while her marriage implodes. It’s here though that Emma finds a photograph that had been hidden away: an explicit image of her school-friend Tessa, staring boldly at the camera, dated the day before her death.

I pinch the screen to zoom until I’m staring at the face of a ghost. A man with very short hair, staring directly at the camera with piercing brown eyes. He is as he was when I last saw him: wrinkles around the corners of the eyes and a knowing smirk. That’s the expression I see when I can’t sleep. My body tenses. It can’t be him. It’s not my ex-husband. It’s not David. I know that better than anyone because he didn’t walk out on me. He didn’t disappear two years ago and he’s not a missing person. I know that for a fact because I’m the one who killed him.

Publisher's Summary
Big Little Lies meets The Party. Kylie Kaden is the freshest new voice in domestic noir.
'It seemed simple at first - folding one lie over the next. She had become expert at feathering over the cracks to ensure her life appeared the same. But inside, it didn't feel fixed.'
It happened the day of the Moon Festival. It could have been left behind, they all could have moved on with their lives. But secrets have a habit of rising to the surface, especially in small towns.
Two couples, four ironclad friendships, the perfect coastal holiday town. With salt-stung houses perched like lifeguards overlooking the shore, Lago Point is the scene of postcards, not crime scenes. Wife and mother Abbi, town cop Blake, schoolteacher Hannah and local doctor Will are caught in their own tangled webs of deceit.
When the truth washes in to their beachside community, so do the judgments: victim or vigilante, who will forgive, who will betray? Not all relationships survive. Nor do all residents.

good but mixed feelings
The story was well thought out, the characters deeply developed, I feel like I have known them forever. mixed feelings, YOU have to pay attention very closely at the start. I actually was going to return this book because I just couldn't figure out what was going on several chapters in. Instead I decided to restart the whole book and paid careful attention when listening to it. After the beginning it's much easier to follow and flows pretty good. It is actually a great book and after the confusing beginning I am glad I stuck with it because I enjoyed it very much!

I had a hard time following this book.
I don’t know if I was distracted, fell asleep, or spaced out on all of the important parts. I liked the book at first. After about an hour of listening I became confused and remained that way for the remainder of the story. I will return this book. I feel like it was fine for some background noise but that’s it.

I just couldn’t get into it
I was extremely confused for several chapters, on who was who and how they related. Maybe I fell asleep and missed something important? 1. I enjoyed the voice of the narrator and would happily listen to her read another book. However, this story is narrated in third-person limited (I believe), with lots of “head hopping” - and when you add on that there is only one narrator for at least four, main, adult characters (two female, two male)...well, it is probably hard to pull that off. It was often unclear who was speaking or thinking. I really don’t think the narrator should be faulted for this; but for me, in this story, it just didn’t work. 2. I would like to applaud the author for writing about a difficult topic in a clear and sensitive way, and not drawing it out more than what was necessary for the reader/listener to understand. 3. This may be a very good book to read, but I can not recommend it as an audiobook. 4. I’ll still look for more titles by this author and stories read by this narrator.

Best audio book in long time!
I listen to ALOT of audio books, and this is the best book I’ve heard in a very long time. The narrator was perfect, the story was awesome, and the writing was top notch. The characters were all fascinating, and I found myself thinking about them between listenings! Great story with multiple twists and turns. I would recommend this book to listeners/readers who like stories about friendship, love, and/or suspense.!

Great narration - and recording which is so important to me - I love Casey Withoos narration but one of her books I could not continue to listen because of the recording- hearing her inhalation .

Easy to predict but...
I enjoyed listening to this book despite its predictability and slow beginning. Set in Australia, great narrator, focus on flawed characters saved it for me. It also raised controversial questions about morality and ethics which were interesting.

Enjoyable unpredictable read
The story is indeed starting a bit slow but it didn't bother me; once action begins, there are quite a few unexpected turns. Really nice to read Australian Authors, I even enjoyed listening to the acknowledgements at the end. The audio narration was pleasant to listen to. i would recommend this book

So very disappointing - too hard to finish
I persevered and persevered but just couldn't finish it. I even Googled reviews to see what I was missing - a lot said the start was too long so I pushed through, with no pay off. I wanted to love it for more than just supporting local, female talent but this was a MASSIVE miss for me. The story takes too long to develop, the characters aren't likeable, the dialogue is cringe worthy in parts and while perhaps finishing it would have tied everything together, it was too arduous for me to get there. Clearly others loved the book but not me.

Disappointed.
I’m really disappointed with this book. The storyline reads like a long & drawn out season of Home & Away (or any teenage genre soap opera) being read in monotone. I’ve struggled to stay connected with the plot & the characters & have finally given up at chapter 11. I Would really like my credit refunded please.

Wonderful characters, great story line. Very believable. Loved the interlocking of the characters, all very true of small towns throughout Australia. Could wait to get back to it and see what was next for the characters. Great read. My husband even recommended it!

A bit child like
Interesting but as usual, way too many Americanisms. We don’t have cell phones in Australia. We don’t set things down or fetch things and we most certainly do not holler.
