A brand-new book from award-winning author Kate Morton, read by powerhouse Emmy award–winning actress Claire Foy. This breathtaking mystery of love, lies and a cold case come back to life is told with Morton's trademark intricacy and beauty.

Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959. At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek in the grounds of a grand and mysterious house, a local deliveryman makes a terrible discovery. A police investigation is called, and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most shocking and perplexing murder cases in the history of South Australia.

Many years later and thousands of miles away, Jess is a journalist in search of a story. Having lived and worked in London for nearly two decades, she now finds herself laid off from her full-time job and struggling to make ends meet. Until a phone call out of nowhere summons her back to Sydney, where her beloved grandmother, Nora, has suffered a fall and been raced to the hospital.

At Nora’s house, Jess discovers a true crime book that chronicles the police investigation into a long-buried event: the Turner Family Tragedy of Christmas Eve, 1959. It is only when Jess skims through the pages that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this once-infamous scandal – a murder mystery that has never been resolved satisfactorily.

The narration is excellent! The story was very interesting and I appreciate the twists at the end. My only objection is that at least 50 pages could have been cut out with no ill effects. I had to speed up the narration as I'm generally a fast reader and I was much too impatient to listen at regular speed. The author tends to the literary side of things, by which I mean she inserts long, descriptive phrases and lots of unnecessary background (do we really need to know the provenance of every item), But, it is a very well-written novel and I didn't guess the whodunit, which is good.

Good story but very long-winded

Kate has a way of taking the story into several directions and tying them all up in the end.

Very nicely written

Although at first, I had a difficult time, keeping the characters in order, the story is one that weaves beautifully through history of a family. The narration brings everyone to life. The story itself takes me in directions. I was not prepared for. Enjoy your may not see the end coming!

Rich family tale.

The prologue is long and slightly boring. Once you get through the first 45 minutes, this book is SO GOOD! You are constantly guessing what happened, and just when you think you have figured it out, something changes your mind. With 2 hours left in the book, we get a conclusion I was waiting for, and I thought “this must be the end of the book.” When I realized there were 2 hours left, I expected to be disappointed in the rest, wondering what was left to tell, but it keeps getting better! Kate Morton wrapped up the ending with plenty of detail and explanation leaving me feeling like I knew everything I wanted to know about the characters, their past, and their present. Highly recommend this read!

Loved this story!!!

I’ve read several of KM novels but this was my first audible experience. Really loved Claire Foy’s narration! This story takes us out of the usual English countryside to Australia which was a nice change. I do not think this book is dull or boring but you have to know what you’re getting into with Morton— her books are a slow burn with beautiful, flowing language. As a fan of hers, I did, however, see the “twists” coming almost immediately, but that’s okay with me.

Kate Morton fans will enjoy
