Great For Vegetarians Looking to Improve Health

I know a LOT of my fellow vegetarians who live on really unhealthy food and i also know a lot who have lost a lot of weight and improved their health by following Dr McDougall. I have already corrected a lot of health problems and lost some weight but I'm hoping to lose more weight and make this lifestyle more sustainable and satisfying.
The recipes are really good! My kids love the pancakes and desserts and I just love eating all the potatoes i like!
If you want to get off insulin, blood pressure drugs, reduce pain from arthritis, alleviate autoimmune disorders, have tons of energy and alleviate gut issues, this is worth a try.

Awesome book

Awesome book, I've lost over 50 pounds in 5 months. I highly recommend this book. Was on blood pressure meds for 22 yrs. I was drug free in month 3.

This is the BEST and Most Effective Plan for Me!!

In the past, I have tried many things to lose weight. However, this is by far, the best plan I have ever followed. Plus, I believe in the plant based diet, because it is the original diet for mankind (Gen. 1:29 & Gen. 2:8,9,15,16) AND it has turned my health around in many ways. With this lifestyle, I immediately experienced weight loss, a drop in my blood pressure, and NO hunger! I am so glad that I can enjoy my starchy foods while losing weight and supporting good health.

Life changing, life affirming

This book could have been titled The Simple Starch Solution because Dr McDougall really does make it simple to understand and easy to follow how to bring health and heading to the table every day.

A plan that works!!!

At first McDougall’s plan seems totally counter intuitive. But stick with the book. His argument is compelling and eventually sounds logical. I started his “diet” when I started the audiobook (yes, I cheated and looked at the last chapter first). In just the 5 days it took me to get through the book I lost 4 pounds AND my chronic heartburn!! I’m 65 and know that I have finally found a real longevity program. More benefits ahead!

What an incredible book! Thanks Dr McDougall!

I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian since 2005. And yes, I changed because I value animals' lives as much as I do mine. But when I noticed recently how changing my diet to a more plant-based diet also made a significant difference in my health and the environment, I was in. I ask myself if I can do better, and the answer is always a resounding yes.
My carnivore hubby has even adapted his food choices as he looked into this book. He's in the medical profession and now he's feeling the benefits of a more plant-based lifestyle as well. I notice I sleep better, feel lighter when I wake up with more energy, my grocery list is less expensive, I can eat all I want, and I have lost a few pounds! What's not to like?! The story, the science and nutritional facts and testimonies make it even better. I have listened to this book already once in one week when I take my walks or when I'm at the gym. I look forward to listening to it again. I have also downloaded the Dr McDougall food app and I'm excited to try all the recipes. I have tried a few already and they are great! I love the dressings and sauces.

Good book

I liked this book and it had a lot of information but it's was lacking something for me. There are a lot of sources in this book that he uses including scientific research but, there a lot of conclusions drawn between certain causal relationships that were not backed with scientific evidence. He would talk about confounding variables for pro-animal product studies, but then draw conclusions that disregarded possible variables from other studies.

My food bible for years has been It Starts With Food and I found this book similar. It was surprising to me how similar the two philosophies are.

Did it work? yes I tried the starch solution plan over the last week and have lost 5 lb so I guess it works. It was also rediculously easy to follow. I had no cravings and my body easily adjusted. My grocery bill was also rediculously small. I'm talking $25 for a whole week in Los Angeles. I can see myself continuing for the foreseeable future.

The Bible for anyone interested in getting healthy

Dr McDougall is a pillar of truth and wisdom. In the finest book of his career, he outlines in detail the core principles he has learned in his 50 years of practicing medicine, namely how to heal people with a healthy diet. If you want to get slim and healthy for good, and visit your physician only on very rare occasions, this is the book for you.
Narration was OK, not bad or very impressive, I'd say it was adequate. Nonetheless, I highly recommend that you either listen to the audio book or buy the Kindle version or print version, as long as you read this. It could change your life and improve it dramatically, like it has for thousands of other people.

Life changing information

Most of us are so misinformed about what food is healthy. I thought I was eating well until I started looking into the actual evidence of nutrition and what effect it has on your body. You MUST read this book and others to educate yourself on how to feed yourself and your family. It could save your life. The other huge benefits of this diet are of environmental urgency and animal welfare.

Specious Vegan Logic

The book often speaks in half truths, sudo science or carefully selected facts supporting the vegan diet while quickly glossing over or completely omitting the detrimental health effects or nutritional shortcomings it entails.

The statements about starch based food being calorically low, good for energy and helping to prevent hunger and craving are definitely true and helpful. The trouble begins when he scapegoats other foods like eggs, olive oil and meats that are just as (if not more) important in terms of nutrients. He provides little to no true evidence as to how these are bad for you and used half baked or anecdotal "evidence" in its place. He often used correlation as proof as causation in this respect.

The diet can work for some for many of the same reasons other fad diets often do. The restrictive nature of foods that you can eat will lead to you eating only out of necessity. You are likely to end up with a caloric deficit day to day simply because of the unpalatable nature of the diet proposed.

This is a book that pushes the vegan diet under the thinly veiled pretence of health.

Just too scary

This guy would have you eating nothing.
I am already a vegan, and eat very little junk or processed food. Yet this guy has managed to make me feel like the most unhealthy person in the world, as if I am deluded and should be ashamed of myself
I already go along with many of his theories, that we should avoid animal products (not only for health!) and that most people eat way too much protein. That's why I bought the book, to vindicate my long-held belief that starches such as whole grains and potatoes are good for you and together with vegetables form the mainstay of a healthy diet.
But when he started to say olive oil, nuts and seeds and soya shouldn't be eaten either, I stopped listening. So perhaps he's right, but I can't live on carrots. I'm not allowed tea, coffee or alcohol either...I'll just kill myself now, shall I?

This book has given me a new way of living and all the information that I need to continue my journey on The Starch Solution. With the help of this book I hope to see my weight go down. This is a new lifestyle for me. the reader is good to listen too also.

Invaluable Information For Good Health

Eye opening information to improve your health and well being. Simple, inexpensive and incredibly speedy results. Would highly recommend to anyone suffering any kind of ailment. The impact is outstanding. Only wish I knew about the Starch Solution decades ago.

Awesome book

This should be the go to book for anyone looking to improve their health, and have the fantastic side affect of a healthy weight loss experience, it is super simple to understand and to follow, I recommend this as it has worked for me.

Nobody has died from eating rice vegetables yet

This is a confronting piece of research, sure to touch a nerve; whatever your eating habits are.

I studied nutrition at an academic level until I couldn't believe what I was reading and hearing any more. It just didn't add up, let alone make any common sense.

Do I agree with every recommendation set out in the Mc Dougall diet? Nope.The author does encourage open debate and (having a quick look through the website videos), isn't at all closed minded. There's some conflicting information within the book in places and it does go into rant mode periodically.

I found the overuse of testimonials and study after study references tedious, but someone else might hear just what they need to that day. The pdf file of recipes is a great reference, and makes up for a lot of the book's shortcomings.

One thing is certain, rice, potatoes and a rainbow of veggies and fruit making up your appropriate calorie intake will not make your life any shorter with disease, and they certainly won't kill you unless you choke on them.

Another “Diet hard” theory supporter

For those who do not know, please read “the big fat surprise” to find out more how the idea that “animal product is bad for you” started in the first place and enjoy those stories of Ancel Keys. As a researcher myself, i can tell you all that there are plenty high quality researches out there to show that Key’s assumption that animal fat consuption leads to heart disease has been proven otherwise and i cannot believe the author still use blood cholesterol as a marker of health in this book (not diffentiating LDL, HDL, let alone bigger and small particles of HDLs).

Ive listened for 3 hours, listening to the narrator repeating that animal product is bad for you, without quoting one single research!!! You cannot just take some unproven assumption of Ancel Key’s and take it as truth. Thats how AFDA got the whole country on the low fat diet in the first place and guess what, they just secretly removed the fat restriction on american’s diet without making a big announcement of it. Too embarrased or to protect the current food industry at the expense of population health? I am returning this book as i do not like the fact that the whole book was based on the assumption that animal product is bad for you without any evidence supporting it. I have read and seen so many opposite opinions and know there are a whole world of scientific evidence to support the opposite view. If only the author would just look it up.
