Publisher's summary

Simon Basset, the irresistible Duke of Hastings, has hatched a plan to keep himself free from the town's marriage-minded society mothers. He pretends to be engaged to the lovely Daphne Bridgerton. After all, it isn't as if the brooding rogue has any real plans to marry - though there is something about the alluring Miss Bridgerton that sets Simon's heart beating a bit faster.

And as for Daphne, surely the clever debutante will attract some very worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable. But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, she soon forgets that their courtship is a complete sham. And now she has to do the impossible and keep herself from losing her heart and soul completely to the handsome hell-raiser who has sworn off marriage forever!

I liked it a lot

Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this romance. It is a good story with good characters. The Bridgeton family is made up of 9 great characters - the mother and 8 children. Daphne, the eldest daughter is the heroine in this book. She gets involved with the Duke of Hastings who suffers with a stammer and his hatred of his wicked father. Can the love of a good woman help him get over his problems?

Love This So Much

I have loved this book and series for 20 years. I just listened again and I still love it. So many moments make you laugh out loud. The romance is sweet without causing too much angst. Their problems are not your typical romance novel issues. Some are but some aren’t. Julia Quinn weaves an extremely well written delightful tale. It never gets old

Great entertainment

Excellent story line. Loved the understanding the author demonstrated of disability and how much difference a loving environment can make for a child.

Enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book. I now will have to get the rest of the series. Also, Rosalyn Landor did a great job on her performance.

I'm Not Usually One For Romance Novels But.....

I decided to purchase this book shortly after watching a few of the episodes on Netflix. While there are some creative differences between the show and the novel, I felt they were done nicely.

This was a splendid romance story up until the very end. The controversial scene in which our two newlyweds are immersing in a drunken coupling after quarreling for days completely changed my perspective of the entire book, and inevitably my opinion of Mrs. Daphne herself.

While I suppose Simon could have been a little more upfront and distinct with his new wife about his horrid upbringing and his desire to remain without any children, I feel his character was done even worse by allegedly the only person to show him, true love.

Daphne knew very well what she was doing in the moment. She made a conscious decision and adamantly defiled her own marriage. She knew her husband was either drunk or barely awake and carried on to have sex with him regardless.

At least in the show, it could be perhaps mistaken for an accident on dear chaste Daphne's part. After all, she was enthralled in the moment. Show Daphne also was unaware of just how horrible the duke's childhood was until after committing the act and seemed to show a bit of understanding after discovering some facts about her husband.

Book Daphne's lack of remorse bothered me greatly. Her character actually goes on to mention how she isn't sorry for her actions and it literally drives me mad with irritation.

If the roles were reversed it would be outrageous.

Enjoyed immensely!

I imagine if you enjoy reading Jane Austen you'll like and even LOVE this story. Year's ago I read the annotated version of Austen's Pride and Prejudice. It helped me understand the traditions and vernacular of that era. I've been hooked ever since!
I'm looking forward to listening to more of Quinn's books narrated by Ms. Landor.

It gets unnecessarily explicit.

I loved the narration and the story; however, [spoiler ahead] the intimacy that Daphne & Simon shared after they wed was extremely graphic on SEVERAL occasions . The author left very little to the imagination .

First historical!

This was my first time reading/listening to a historical romance and most certainly not my last. I was recommended this be the book I dive into the genre with and I cannot wait to read more. I'm officially obsessed!
