Publisher's Summary

Jack Audley has been a highwayman.

A soldier. And he has always been a rogue. What he is not, and never wanted to be, is a peer of the realm, responsible for an ancient heritage and the livelihood of hundreds. But when he is recognized as the long-lost son of the House of Wyndham, his carefree life is over. And if his birth proves to be legitimate, then he will find himself with the one title he never wanted: Duke of Wyndham.

Grace Eversleigh has spent the last five years toiling as the companion to the dowager Duchess of Wyndham. It is a thankless job, with very little break from the routine...until Jack Audley lands in her life, all rakish smiles and debonair charm. He is not a man who takes no for an answer, and when she is in his arms, she's not a woman who wants to say no. But if he is the true duke, then he is the one man she can never have....

kinda boring

I usually love this author narrator combo but this book was kinda boring. It was predictable and not really witty like the author usually is.

🥴 Gave Up!

With about four hours left, I gave up. Perhaps the pace will pick up because it started out beautifully but I just haven’t been able to get into it and have gotten distracted with other things pretty easily.

I may try to finish at a later time.

Love Julia Quinn, though. Rosalyn Landor, as always, is superb.

DNF

While I like Julia Quinn and her usual narrator, I struggled to enjoy this book. The main characters almost had sex after knowing each other for a day and that's not my cup of tea. Too much farfetched sexual tension. Intimacy should add to the story, not overpower it. Halfway through I returned it. Storyline was okay otherwise, nothing special. Wish it was funnier.

Lovely story, interesting characters

While I'm a huge fan of both Julia Quinn and Rosalyn Landor, this book wasn't one of their best. And it's because of the two main characters....and that dreadful Dower Duchess. Jack is a scamp...but didn't quite come across that way. And Grace...I think she has a great strength of character, but again the portrayal fell short. BUT.....I still liked the book and will listen again.

The Narration drove me nuts.

I could not stand the narration in this book. It really sounded overworked and forced in this person’s register.

I’ll finish reading it on my own but I just felt as if a grandmother was reading a book to me as she thought a young person wanted it read to them.

I tried to ignore it, but jeez I just personally could not stand it. Nails on a chalk board.

A Quinn though not a Bridgerton

I liked this story and all of the characters. I even liked the terrible Dowager. Whatever problems this book has could have been resolved with better editing. It was a fun listen, even if not memorable. I wish Jack could have given more scenes as a devil-may-care jokester with a heart who wins. He was his most charming the first time we see him.

Rosalyn as the narrator is what ties this up with a bow, otherwise it wouldn’t be worth a credit.

Not as good

This one was very slow and very temped to turn it off. Not worth the time or credit.

Can we get a mini series?!

As always Rosalyn Landor’s performance is flawless. One of my favorite romance narratives of Julia Quinn’s books. Jack is a shameless flirt and I’m here for it! The dowager duchess gives me Violet from Downton vibes. All in all, it’s exactly what you’d want from a Julia Quinn storyline… I’ll be impatiently awaiting for them to bring these characters to life and create a mini series. With the second book in the series being essentially the same as this, they could adapt the tv series to follow them each in real time which would be fun to see how they all fit together.

Put me to sleep for nearly two months

This is possibly the most boring story ever written. No character development at all. The entire book is one long winded expression of feelings. The narrator cannot do a male voice without making him sound like a grunting neanderthal so when our supposed hero is being emotional it’s impossible to take seriously and is cringeworthy instead. I listen to books at bedtime and this one put me to sleep for months and I had to listen in the mornings just to get through it.

It free on me

I hated Jack’s character for the first half of the book. He was written as a weird regency Jack Sparrow. Pretty cringe. But I realised I was actually really invested in the story and wanted to know what happened. By the end I couldn’t stop listening.

Julia Quinn fan

I enjoy Julia Quinn novels. Historical romance and drama. This is the first audio book I have listened to by JQ , and I wish I had downloaded the preview . It was spoilt for me by the narrator whose voice was not suited to the male characters. Generally over exaggerated tone with the descriptions and atmosphere ,although the dowager was quite good.
A lesson learned for me with audio, listen before purchase!

Loved it

The perfect combination of Rosalyn with her 1000 voices and Julia. Was rather hesitant after reading other reviews but must have been a bad day over there because it is great

Not One But Two

Since finishing the entire Bridgerton, Belvestoke and their series offshoots I have been waiting for and wanting more. I devoured this and the book following - featuring Two heroes, two points of view, no actual villain, surprise twist in each main characters’ stories - a slight variation on the usual formula - in two days. The second part practically writes itself. Love love love this narrator’s work.

Egg or Chicken - either/or

As per the sentiments expressed in my review of the sister book 'Mr Caversham, I Presume' which I listened to first, i found this version of the same story somewhat redundant. You could get away with listening to one or the other to arrive at the same conclusion - the differing POVs not being riverting enough to justify 2 books.

I also didn't think the characters were balanced compared to the other book. In this one Amelia was a bit of a stubbed toe.

Frankly whilst the narration was good, I did prefer the other to this one.

I wonder if my opinion would've been any difference had I listened to this one first.
