Publisher's summary

The Changed are on the move. The Spared are out of time. The End…is now. When her parents died, Alex thought things couldn't get much worse - until the doctors found the monster in her head. She headed into the wilderness as a good-bye, to leave everything behind. But then the end of the world happened, and Alex took the first step down a treacherous road of betrayal and terror and death. Now, with no hope of rescue - on the brink of starvation in a winter that just won't quit - she discovers a new and horrifying truth. The Change isn't over. The Changed are still evolving. And…they've had help. With this final volume of The Ashes Trilogy, Ilsa J. Bick delivers a riveting, blockbuster finish, returning listeners to a brutal, post-apocalyptic world where no one is safe and hope is in short supply. A world where, from these ashes, the monsters may rise.

This is not a book, its a poor play

Way too over the top for my taste. I like to absorb and consider the story as it unfolds. This style of writing, in my opinion, is distracting. I know a good author paints a picture but this carries the premise to the extreme. Sadly the story is lost with long winded, blow by blow descriptions which (for me) stop the story in its tracks. It seemed to take 30 minutes to describe a body falling down a hole...irritating. When a piece becomes too wordy my focus shifts to the narrator and given the dramatic emphasis on every sentence I just couldn't cope. Finally gave up.

Too busy and difficult to follow

What could Ilsa Bick have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I kept listening to this series in the hope that something significant would happen in the plot, or that the ending would be memorable.... I was disappointed both ways. There were too many characters and twists to follow and too many plot developments that seemed to go nowhere. Honestly, I don't even know what the main plot was supposed to be.

How could the performance have been better?

This series was especially hard to listen to because of the narrator. When listening without headphones I sometimes muted the sound in embarrassment at the narrator's shrieking and shouting.... there was a lot of shrieking....

Any additional comments?

I just feel like I wasted a lot of time and money; and I can't believe that I actually listened to all three books - had I not been laid up in bed from surgery I never would have listened to more than the first book.

Loved the first two but gave up on this one

After having the narrator scream at me for 45 minutes I gave up on this book couldn't tell you if it's any good or not. I'm thinking I will just have to pick up the physical book and read it on my own. It really is sad that this book is completely ruined by all of the screaming.

EMP causes all kinds of trouble.

This is the third book in the series. An EMP wipes out modern technology, and also zaps the higher brain functions of a certain percentage of humanity. The "changed" are not zombies. Most of the higher brain functions are gone, but they are more dangerous than you might think, because they retain the ability to think, plan, work together, and use simple tools. Up to a point, they can even use weapons. Fortunately, they can feel pain, they retain the instinct of self-preservation, unlike the traditional zombie, and they are susceptible to injury and death.

Katherine Kellgren is one of the best narrators I have ever listened too. She has a clear, pleasant voice, and an expressive style that carries you right into the story with her. I hope she will read more books like this.

Glad it was over, too many shifts.......

I really enjoyed book 1 & 2, saying that 3 had 120+ chapters, it went back and forth between characters: Alex, Chris, Peter, Ellie until you didn't really know where you were then dang if there wasn't the beginning of another chapter, and all there was to this book was fighting, the plot picked up toward the end but just felt like it dropped off all of a sudden. I didn't really enjoy this book due to narration was constant urgency, it felt redundant, there were too many chapters, the characters didn't move on, the end was great but it should have been drawn out more than the middle, like 17 hours of middle. Seriously was glad it was over, didn't think it was EVER going to be over. So I'm middle of the road in recommending. If the above doesn't bother you try it.

The end!

The first two books were really great, but this last book was too frantic. There were way too many characters to keep track of and who had changed into whom. The end was left up in the air as if there was to be another book. You are left with with " and this is the end of the Ashes Trilogy". Very disappointing.

Not as good as Ashes.

Again just like shadows this book was told from way to many perspectives. Not happy with conclusion either.

Stop screaming in my ear

While all in all this story was OK the narrator's high pitch voice screaming everything, sometimes three times in a row, "GO GO GO!" "NO NO NO!" "GET UP GET UP GET UP!" non-stop in my ear became a personal challenge to finish "I bought this series so by god i will FINISH FINISH FINISH!"
