Publisher's summary

Like many women, Clare Pooley found the juggle of a stressful career and family life a struggle, so she left her successful role as a managing partner in one of the world's biggest advertising agencies to look after her family.

She knew the change wouldn't be easy, but she never expected to find herself an overweight, depressed, middle-aged mother of three who was drinking more than a bottle of wine a day and spending her evenings Googling 'am I an alcoholic?'

This book is the bravely honest story of a year in Clare's life. A year that started with her quitting booze and then being given the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer. By the end of the year she is booze-free and cancer-free, no longer has a wine belly and is two stone lighter and with a life that is so much richer, healthier and more rewarding than ever before. She has a happier family and a more positive outlook.

Sober Diaries is an upbeat, funny and positive look at how to live life to the full. Interwoven within Clare's own very personal and brilliantly comic story is research and advice as she discovers the answers to questions like:

  • How do I know if I'm drinking too much?
  • How will I cope at parties?
  • What do I say to friends and family?
  • How do I cope with cravings?
  • If I stop drinking, will I lose weight?
  • What if my partner still drinks?

And many more.

Thank you for writing such a beautiful memoir on addiction and recovery

I feel like saying no one should review this book unless you’re in recovery or struggling with addiction because it’s so hard and unless you’ve gone through it sometimes you just don’t know so that’s what I want to say first but that seems snobby some how ... but secondly if anyone is struggling with addiction just take the time to listen to this or read this or share this. it’s really a special insight On addiction and alcoholism and being a non-drinker, which is What I consider myself. Alcoholic has a terrible stigmatism I don’t feel like I’m an alcoholic. I feel like I was addicted to alcohol and I decided to remove it from my life. I’m not broken I am simply a non-drinker. You don’t have to be a mom or cancer survivor or even a non drinker yourself to enjoy this writing -you just need to read it and share it - thank you Clare

Very Inspiring!

I loved this book! I think I could actually listen to it again, I loved the humor and her stories with bits of facts and information. I could relate to quite a bit, being a mom and in my mid forties and very dependent on wine. I am 7 days sober and need to find another inspiring book to get me through the “pink cloud” phase.
The narrator was excellent as well, I made it through the whole book, which says a lot for me because I tend to get tired of a narrators voice.

Not just about drinking

I enjoyed but half the story is her discussing her breast cancer diagnosis.

Overall it was an enjoyable listen.

Great narrator for a great story.

Great addition to QuitLit! The narrator did a great job as Clare and it was easy to forget it wasn’t actually her.
