Publisher's summary

New York Times best seller

Deepak Chopra joins forces with leading physicist Menas Kafatos to explore some of the most important and baffling questions about our place in the world.

"A riveting and absolutely fascinating adventure that will blow your mind wide open!" (Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi)

What happens when modern science reaches a crucial turning point that challenges everything we know about reality? In this brilliant, timely, and practical work, Chopra and Kafatos tell us that we've reached just such a point. In the coming era, the universe will be completely redefined as a "human universe" radically unlike the cold, empty void where human life is barely a speck in the cosmos.

You Are the Universe literally means what it says: Each of us is a cocreator of reality extending to the vastest reaches of time and space. This seemingly impossible proposition follows from the current state of science, where outside the public eye, some key mysteries cannot be solved, even though they are the very issues that define reality itself:

  • What came before the Big Bang?
  • Why does the universe fit together so perfectly?
  • Where did time come from?
  • What is the universe made of?
  • Is the quantum world linked to everyday life?
  • Do we live in a conscious universe?
  • How did life first begin?

"The shift into a new paradigm is happening," the authors write. "The answers offered in this book are not our invention or eccentric flights of fancy. All of us live in a participatory universe. Once you decide that you want to participate fully with mind, body, and soul, the paradigm shift becomes personal. The reality you inhabit will be yours either to embrace or to change." What these two great minds offer is a bold new understanding of who we are and how we can transform the world for the better while reaching our greatest potential.

Critic reviews

"Almost 100 years ago the sage Tagore and the scientist Einstein had a brief encounter to discuss the nature of reality. Revisiting their fascinating discourse on how science and spirituality inform each other is long overdue and this new book finally does it! Even if you - like me, prefer Einstein's world, this book will make you marvel at Tagore's beautiful human universe as masterfully uncovered by the authors." (Dimitar Sasselov, professor of astronomy, Harvard University; author of The Life of Super-Earths: How the Hunt for Alien Worlds and Artificial Cells will Revolutionize Life on Our Planet)
"This is not just another popular science book asking who am I? and why am I here?. This important new book addresses today's most important scientific questions regarding our very existence. In the end, we can't help but to be convinced that we live in a participatory universe that we define and synthesize according to the nervous system we enjoy as a species. The result is a riveting and absolutely fascinating literary adventure that will blow your mind wide open!" (Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi, Joseph. P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology; Harvard Medical School vice chair, neurology; director, Genetics and Aging Research Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital)
"An inspiring and insightful work that points out the sterility and inadequacy of the materialist paradigm that unnecessarily pervades modern science." (Ruth E. Kastner, PhD, author of Understanding Our Unseen Reality: Solving Quantum Riddles)

Add this one to your list of must listens.

The book walks the line between spirituality and science to bring awareness of ones self as a participant, creator, observer in the perception of the universe that is found in self. With a good grasp of the science used to describe the physical universe the book attempts to encourage and bring to light the surging trend of consciousness of mind and universe. Through this understanding a new enlightenment of self and reality is hoped to spawn. For those who already have been considering these ideas this book may provide validation of your thoughts as well as help to connect some dots that you may be missing. Definitely one to add to your library.

Perception Altering

not for the beginner! in depth summation, physics, quantum physics and our existence within it.

I will listen again just to make sure I missed nothing.

there was a moment of pure understanding of which I felt a part of.....everything. as if my body and mind expanded to fill the universe...or best stated to be of the universe. just a moment, as soon as I realized what was happening....it moved on beyond my ability to grasp. made me laugh as I read further and it was stated, that understanding fully..or experiencing fully was impossible, because awareness collapses all into the Now...which does not really exist!

amazing and wonderful.

Unexpectedly very Science-y

Be in a Science frame of mind before listening to this book. I am going to have to listen to it again to understand it. I sometimes lost focus and would have to back up. I backed up so often and re-listened again and again because I would find myself day-dreaming (or falling asleep). Frankly, I have a tough time with some science books and don't find them fun.

The whole space-time thing is a struggle. Just living in it is too. ;)

I learned something, but not sure what it is.

Pretty heavy thinking. interesting stuff.

This is not your typical novel. It is by one of our greatest mind's today so don't expect a joy ride. This is for deep thinking and requires your undivided attention, but we'll worth the time.

Food for deep thought

While I have a very good education in science, physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering, this brings a whole new dimension to all of those. I'm now going to read/listen again. it will take a while to absorb.

Above my head

I expected a spiritual revelation but there is so much technical theory I got lost. Not what I expected from Deepak Chopra.

Great discussion. .. lousy conclusion

I really enjoyed the discussion of how the laws of physics relate to each other and our perception of the universe. But the authors do not present a compelling case for the universal consciousness.

this book is based in mystical and spiritual

horrible! horrible! horrible! non factual, based on the opinion of the author that have not based whatsoever. This just shows how incorrectly and misleading the reviews can be. This book should not have four stars!! and should not be in the science and technology category since is not based in facts and studies.

So Far... Disappointed

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Sorry, I have no idea.

Has You Are the Universe turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not at all.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kaleo Griffith?

Deepak Chopra.

Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed many of Deepak's works from the mid 90's to the early 2000's. He is truly an amazing individual, who has clearly helped many. To be fair, I am only through the Overview in "You are the Universe, but I know I am going to have a tough time listening to the rest and I am not sure when, or if, I will do so. I was surprised and disappointed not to hear Deepak's credible and soothing voice on this audio. Naturally, I have lots of respect for Deepak, but not on this one.
