Publisher's Summary

We don't think too much about sex; we're merely thinking about it in the wrong way.

So asserts Alain de Botton in this rigorous and supremely honest book designed to help us navigate the intimate and exciting - yet often confusing and difficult - experience that is sex. Few of us tend to feel we're entirely normal when it comes to sex, and what we’re supposed to be feeling rarely matches up with the reality.

This audiobook argues that 21st-century sex is ultimately fated to be a balancing act between love and desire, and adventure and commitment. Covering topics that include lust, fetishism, adultery, and pornography, Alain de Botton frankly articulates the dilemmas of modern sexuality, offering insights and consolation to help us think more deeply and wisely about the sex we are, or aren’t, having.

"How to Think About Sex as Only Sex"
Would you listen to How to Think More About Sex again? Why?

I listened to it twice. I would consider listening again. It is full of brilliant insights and observations.

What was one of the most memorable moments of How to Think More About Sex?

I liked his description early on about a couple's first date and his description of what they were both experiencing and why.

What does David Thorpe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He has a rich voice and does justice to the articulate text.

What did you learn from How to Think More About Sex that you would use in your daily life?

Intimate relationships are complicated imperfect things. If we adjust our expectations we can appreciate relationships and sex for what they are rather than having pie-in-the-sky expectations.

    Any additional comments?

Great book. I can think of 100 people I could recommend it to.

    "Partially wise but mostly paternalistic"

Despite having some wise observations here and there De Botton has a very paternalistic tone all over the book. I find his little exemplary stories awkward and full of annoying stereotypes and the chapter on internet porn prudeish, parodic and obtuse.

"must read for anyone struggling in marriage or"

entering marriage in an idealistic way. Eye opening and validating. Romantic marriage for decades is impossible, makes me realize I am not inadequate but striving for the impossible. those who say they have it I now know aren't truthful consciously or unconsciously.
