Not Nearly as Good as the Podcast

As a fan of Esther Perel’s “Where Should We Begin?” Podcast I was underwhelmed. This feels like a “bonus” episode crafted from not particularly strong leftovers. It was a bit disappointing.

Man shaming and irresposible counseling

This therapist is a perfect example of unprofessionalism. In the couples counseling, she tends to blame the men for nearly everything, portraying the women as victims. I don't claim to be a marriage expert, but as a woman I have been happily married for over a decade to a man in a marriage which according to nearly every statistic out there should not have lasted, and the way this therapist portrays things simply isn't accurate. There are a few moving moments in some of the stories told, but for the most part I was shocked at the unprofessionalism and clear bias this therapist portrayed.

The icing on the cake came in the example of the final story, that of a newly divorced couple who got along well and wanted to ensure they continued to do so. This so-called therapist repeatedly encouraged the man to give his wife the second child she'd always wanted as an "apology" for all he supposedly did wrong during their marriage. She also stated that the act of considering financial readiness prior to having a child is ridiculous and unnecessary. This woman clearly comes from a background that places great value on bringing children into the world regardless of the circumstances, but to guilt a newly divorced man into having another child with his ex-wife when he has already stated his reasons for not wanting one is ridiculous, unprofessional, and wrong. She should lose her license for that type of "treatment."

Ester Perel Will Transform Your Relationships

I first heard Ester Perel on a podcast about regaining intimacy in relationships where infidelity has occurred. Her ideas were like a breath of fresh air. It was like she had turn on a light in my thought process that I never realized had been turned off in the first place. I then found her podcast, Where Should We Begin, and was floored by the vulnerability of the couples she interviewed. We can all see ourselves in each and every couple; recognize their challenges and accomplishments in our own lives. Esther has this talent of revealing what is at the core of each couples issues, in a way that has them, and you as a listener, going, “ah-ha!” Her podcast is so exceptional, and her books are as well. If you ever want to listen to the stories of others, empathize with them, learn from them, then Esther Perel’s work is for you.

liked even when I expected not to

I really enjoyed learning to the different struggles that couples and families have and Dr. Perel's ability to get them to explore their feelings and emotions in a supportive way.
I picked the book as it was the 2nd pick and closest thing to something I was interested in. I was sad when it ended as I really enjoyed all the guiding advice.
Give it a try. I think you will not regret it.

Isle of the counselor

I wish she would have addressed the obvious personality disorder... But maybe because it's only one session? Otherwise it's terrific, exactly what you would expect, it's basically audio voyeurism -- like reality TV to a point

Insight into people's minds and relationships

Simply engaging all through the episodes. You can put things in perspective. Esther is very articulative , clear and supportive in her talks. Very engaging. At times seems like eavesdropping into the couple's personal sessions.

Captivating

It has been such a privilege to get to hear these intimate experiences of various people handled with such nuance, compassion and reason. Although I am only 20 and not in any form of a romantic relationship, listening to this has enlightened me more about the intricate nature of human relationships.

Thank you Esther and all the people involved.

A forensic investigation of dysfunction

This series is enthralling. The second episode in particular, I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through, it was so intense . It’s like listening to a seasoned interrogator use empathy and guile to unearth a couples deepest secrets and untangle decades of miscommunication in minutes. There’s a new catharsis every five minutes- it’s almost exhausting, how good she is.

Everyone should listen. We all have something to learn from this.

There's something about real unfiltered stories - in particular, one we rarely hear about: the challenges of immigration laws in romantic relationships. kudos

Magical, life-giving, irreplaceable...

For those of us who seek not only to understand ourselves better but also the systems that shape us, Perel is invaluable – with each new episode, I naively wonder whether I will discover anything relevant to my life, and yet, episode after episode (and season after season), through these brief little windows into her work, we continue to meet the hidden, misunderstood, unexamined, overly examined, rehearsed, speechified, forgotten, infantile, wistful, resourceful, remorseful, joyful and imaginative parts of ourselves and our stories. Once again, Perel and her team have delivered something which we really have yet to find elsewhere. She is a gift to us all, and it is such an honour to listen. Thank you Esther, and thank you to everyone at Audible. You are changing lives and ushering us into a new era of relationships.

Good but not as good as podcast

Esther is always interesting to listen. I love her free podcast series, but unfortunately this book felt like leftovers stitched together from that rather than a standalone book that provided value over and above her free content.
