Publisher's Summary

As a child Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man.

When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating - and waiting for suitable prey. Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs, and hell takes on a new meaning. Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors....

Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.

    "A very good listen."

I don't usually write reviews, I normally just rate them, but this book was so unexpectedly different from what I thought it would be, I had to write.
I expected the book to be the same story from all the other books or movies, with different words and character names, but I was very surprised. The book was very good, I didn't want to pause it when I had to, and I stayed up until 6am just to finish it. If you like the Alien stuff, or Sci-fi stuff, I definitely recommend giving this book a go, my personal opinion was, it was very good, and very much worth the credit. Oh, and I hope you enjoy Alien: Out of the Shadows as much as I did.

    "Good story"

I've listened to the audio drama version and this audiobook. There is differences in the story. But I'm glad I've heard this. It's a great drama and I think that bringing in Ripley was unnecessary but I liked out how it fitted in the alien movies timeline.
Recommend it to listen to this and the drama version as well

"Interim Story with Excellent Plot Point"

I'm a fan of the Alien series and am pleased to see stories in print. Having read a very good original story called Return, I wanted to see what the first book of this series would bring. Out of the Shadows is a mixed affair. One on hand, we are rushed into the story with little introduction to some of the characters. The action is somewhat fast paced. It also tended to drag a bit in the middle section, when the survivors had to make planetfall, before they met with the Aliens. Things did pick up once they did. On the other hand, the author did a good job with Ripley and I loved Chris Hooper. I would've appreciated a prologue stating what happened to him instead of just leaving us hanging. It also featured a truly original and inspired plot device that I will leave you to discover. That was the best part of the book and was well written. All in all a great story. Jeff Harding did a wonderful job with the narration and voices.

    "A Serviceable Aliens Story"

I wasn't thrilled with "Alien: Out of the Shadows: Book 1" overall, but there's a lot that I liked about it.

The narrator is great. His voice seemed perfectly suited for the subject matter, and he performed a number of recognizable, credible male and female Voices. Jeff Harding's contribution is the highlight of the production.

Also, it's well-written. It's a testament to Lebbon's skill as an author that he's able to make the actual writing almost an afterthought--the writing is unobtrusive and serves the story perfectly.

However, I didn't find the story all that exciting. Lebbon knows how to write action, but there's quite a bit of downtime that never is as suspenseful as it could or should be.

Lastly, although I suspect it might have been a decision outside of the author's hands, I think the addition of movie characters Ripley and Ash into this story was particularly unfortunate, as I never believed that these canonical characters would be in any way changed by the time the story was through. But hey--no spoilers--maybe it turned out that I was wrong,.

Absolutely awesome experience. Starting chapters are a little too fast on content (need more time to like the characters), but otherwise really good.

    "Ripley's Nightmare..!"

A good narrative addition between Alien and Aliens. Ripley continues to combat the monster which nearly killed her while she was part of the crew onboard the UCSS Nostromo. This time the fight is within the cresh of the Aliens. The addition of Ash continuing to carry out his instructions found within special order 937 is a good addition and twist to the story overall; proving once more how evil the company is. Weyland-Yutani is a shady corporation who will stop at nothing to acquire a Xenomorph for their bio-weapons division.

    "Well done Alien story"

I enjoyed this book, and look forward to the next in the series. I read a review on this book that I agreed with. The side bar stories of Ripley were a little distracting at times, so that was the reason for the #4 in story.

I found the book predictable with no real plot twist or anything new to bring to the alien universe. I did finish the book however this was just to make sure I had guessed correctly regarding the plot.
