Publisher's summary

Terry Hayes, author of the #1 global bestseller I Am Pilgrim, returns with this terrifying and eagerly awaited instant bestseller.

If, like Kane, you’re a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again—by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide—and when to shoot.

But some places don’t play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane’s experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan meet are such a place—a place where violence is the only way to survive.

Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West—but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart...

Close Eyes and Buy It... Thank Me Later

I don't want to give away anything but this was one of my favorite books of all time. And I thought "I am Pilgrim" was also one of my favorite books of all time and I've listened to a lot of books. whoever this Terry Hayes is. I like him and I think he'd be the kind of guy that I'd enjoy having a beer with.

A consistent pleasure

I have listened to this book over 10 times. I look forward to hearing a few chapters at a time as I transition from action to sleep. I know a lot about bout a few of the cultures and topics, so I can opine the information is legit. There is a broad scope, both temporally and geographically with lively descriptions. Adeptly narrated.

Wow

This book was such a wild ride - I have never read one like it before. Some similar elements to Pilgrim but an amazingly complex story that had me on the edge of my seat. I hope there is another!

Not like Pilgrim, but still FUN!

Okay first, the narrator isn't a bad narrator by any means, but his voice is too old sounding for the age of the character and it kind of dampers the story, imo. He does great with the other voices, but just the main character isn't supposed to be in his 50s.

Second, I enjoy the sci-fi and the spy genres- I think this is the first one I've listened to that encompasses both. I can understand that some people could be put off by this, but I wasn't. I enjoyed the twists, I stayed captivated for all 239 hours of this book ;). Meanwhile compared to Pilgrim, this book is not the same kind of story and I think Pilgrim was a better book. I'm not sure why it's listed as a Book 2 when really it's just a different book and series all together - no connection to Pilgrim at all.

I think my only critiques of the story would be that every time our hero got into a sticky sitch, he'd mention how tricky it was and then he'd find a magic way out...so maybe just don't say how tricky it is bc the hero's telling the story, we know he gets out. Anyhoos, worth the credit, and I'll probably listen to it again at some point.

Strong start; ultimately falls short

The first 2/3 of the book are great but it falls apart into science fiction. Hayes’ sophomore effort doesn’t hold a candle to Pilgrim.

Great writing, believable characters, engrossing plot.

I loved this book, never anticipating the turn it took. I plan to get the first book in the series next.

Amazing!! Best book I’ve read or listened to in years!

If you like intricate spy novels this is a must read! Its length was a pleasure, and it was a journey that I never wanted to end! I’m a huge fan of Mr Hayes and I only wish that he would write faster but good stories take time to develop, and it’s clear - this is an epic masterpiece!

Terry Hayes’ return

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Well worth the wait, I think. I hope there’s another in less than a decade Mr. Hayes!
