Publisher's Summary

Anna never knew werewolves existed until the night she survived a violent attack…and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she’d learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. But Anna is that rarest kind of werewolf: an Omega. And one of the most powerful werewolves in the country will recognize her value as a pack member—and as his mate.

    "Patricia Briggs... Enough said."

Great series. I love Anna and Charles and the Mercy Thompson/ Alpha & Omega worlds. Honestly anything that Patricia Briggs writes I will buy, she is an excellent writer.

Holter Graham is my favorite narrator based on his work on this series. This novella first appeared in "On the prowl" and honestly was the only part of that novel that was worth reading. I was glad when she chose to sell this story individually. Although it is not necessary for you to read Mercy Thompson or this novella before reading Cry Wolf, it does help in understanding the overall plot.

Not very long so I would just buy and save your credit, but definitely worth a purchase.

"Be ready to listen over again and again"
If you could sum up Alpha and Omega in three words, what would they be?

Charles is sent to Chicago and saves Anna a omega wolf

What did you like best about this story?

It shows that the beast can be swayed by beauty. Good comes in different packages and one of those can be a very scary werewolf. It also proves that good can be strong.

What does Holter Graham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Holter Graham has a deep presence that gives the book more depth and quality. Nice job. Well done

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Anna told Charles to change after he was shot the first time.

    Any additional comments?

I am a happy member of this series fan club.

    Story
    "Interesting prequel"

Set in Chicago, Anna is the lowest in her pack, a werewolf pack she wasn’t given the choice in joining. After years of abuse, she is ready for a change. The Marrock has sent his son Charles to sort things out. Neither Charles nor Anna get what they expected.

I listened to this book as part of a group read and it’s a prequel to Cry Wolf. The Alpha and Omega series is a spin-off of the Mercy Thompson series and is more romance oriented. Honestly, it’s been some years since I read Mercy Thompson but I believe I like that series quite a bit more than this series.

So Charles is a dominant male among the werewolves and he’s a big handsome guy with skills. He meets Anna and discovers she’s an Omega, which is a person who can soothe and bind a pack together. However, her pack isn’t using her skills; instead they are just using her. By that I mean they take a chunk of her paycheck, have her clean and run errands, and pass her around sexually to reward pack members for questionable deeds. Obviously, Charles is not pleased at this at all. There shall be a reckoning!

There was insta-love between Anna and Charles on a primal level in which their inner wolves recognized it but their human sides took longer to figure it out. I liked the dual nature of this aspect of the story. I also like that this tale shows just what the Marrock, Bran, doesn’t want among the North American packs.

While some justice is meted out by the end, I felt that certain wolves didn’t show remorse over their actions, claiming they were ordered to abuse Anna and other lesser members. Obviously, some of these wolves will need further calibration.

The story had some intense moments, but the romance was a meh for me. I felt that Anna’s character was just too submissive all around. There’s the need to survive a bad situation, sure, but we could have used some inner Anna thoughts about how to avoid the worst of it, or change it, or sabotage food. Something.

The Narration: Holter Graham makes a very good Marrock and a very good Charles. His feminine voices were OK. I liked the harsh tones he can adopt when two wolves are squaring off. I also liked his soothing, patient voice for the Marrock.

"Outstanding Novella with a Fantastic Narrator"

Holter Graham is the perfect narrator for this wonderful story. His voice characterizations are spot-on for every one of the characters in the story. And the fact that the story is great makes this a very entertaining book that I can listen to over and over again. Highly recommended!

    "Included story in Shifting Shadows"
What made the experience of listening to Alpha and Omega the most enjoyable?

I wasn't paying attention to the title and for got this story was included in Shifting Shadows: Stories from the World of Mercy Thompson. It was good to hear this story again. If you start the Alpha & Omega tales it would be good to start here. If you are following the tales of Mercy Thompson and get the Shifting Shadows this is the last tale and should follow up with the Alpha & Omega set and not worry about missing something by not starting here. Or like me get it also and now I want to start the set again.

    "Love Charles!"

    bookshelves: werewolves, mercyverse, reread

This is the background on Charles and his Anna in a miniseries devoted just to them. Excellent writing and characterization unusual in such a short piece. Loved it!
Holter Graham is excellent as narrator, both because of his natural voice and his performance.
