Critic reviews

“Alexander does a lovely job of representing the historical details … without letting the facts distract from a tenderly told love story.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Character got off too easy!

After Claire is discovered as the forger, she predictably has everything handed to her on a silver platter- her “community service” was no punishment, her relationships hardly suffered, and the courts were extremely lenient. I think that could have been made more realistic. I love the settings Tamera chooses and she develops her characters well and has a really nice sense of humor woven in. I do like my happy endings I generally really enjoy Tameras work!

The narrators childish voice was almost a deal breaker til I sort of got used to it- but to me she made the characters sound a bit simple with some of the tones she used...and it was a struggle to the end to enjoy the audible part of the book.

Save your credit

Don't get me wrong - the voice actor has a very pleasant voice. I just didn't enjoy listening to her read from the perspective of a 19-year-old young woman character and very little differentiation between any of the other characters. The book just seems wrong on so many levels. I don't think audible made it clear that it was an inspirational romance first off (my mistake) and there were situations that seem highly unlikely in mid-19th-century among the wealthy and affluent. Sutton spending many hours in the late day in Claire's bedroom keeping her awake after a head injury, for one. More than a big issue for me was the portrayal about the mental faculties of a 48-year-old man. They talk about him like he was 108. I found the book to be fussy and so slow, even though I was interested in the story and finding out how it ended. I still have 3 hours to go and I don't think I can stand it anymore. I buy books that I can read or listen to again and again and I won't be listening to this one again. This book is more than painful. Historical detail aside - Save your credit.

More than an hour and a half to go and the author just portrayed a woman that can't be 50 with serious dementia. This seems to be a continuous theme throughout.

After re-reading reviews from others, I feel certain that these people didn't actually read the book but skimmed through it.

I couldn’t quit listening!

The story was so well written I found myself smitten with all the characters, but the audible reader brought it to life! I found myself weak kneed when the main character was wooed by her pursuer just from the reader’s use of different voices! I can’t wait to read more of Tamera’s novels! You will love this book!

Excellent

Finding it hard to remove any of this authors books because of how much I appreciate and enjoy her books. The narrator is also excellent. Love the combination. Going to try to keep her books on my kindle until I run into memory issues. I have found my favorite author in Tamera Alexander and also my preferred narrator in Linda Stephens. The combination was a great experience for me. The book was a very moving experience for me and kept my interest throughout the story of a young woman who improved her situation.

A religious romance!

Although I enjoy passion in my stories, if tastefully done, I also enjoy the ones where the draw between H/H is palpable and without any physical touching as it is here with this storyline. I feel it makes the story somehow better since all the feelings and the rise of passion is evoked in the reader without adding in sexual scenes, and thus delivering a more satisfying story.
I enjoyed the book overall and can honestly say that the narration ruined it for Tamera Alexander. The voices seemed so old even those belonging to little kids. I also agree with one reviewer whom stated some things mentioned in the book were not historically accurate like Sutton taking care of the heroine alone day and night (would not have happened that time period). I also agree with her in Tamara's portrayal of those characters over 40 appearing ancient. Yes people did not live long those days but I don't know a 48 year old nowadays who acts old. Again, I still feel this is well worth the credit.

Another good story from Tamera Alexander

This is a great story. There is nothing cliché in this book. I liked the surprise ending.

great story

Great story! But, the narrator's voice was too old for most characters in the book. I had to keep reminding myself that the characters were mostly 19 - 35 year olds.

A Picturesque, Well-Written Story

This novel was well set up and the reader really gets to known the main character well. At times I felt like we should’ve been further along in the plot for as far into the story we were but the details were and swell of emotions written were well done. You’ll be pleading for the supporting characters to see Claire as you do the whole way through.

Clean and enjoyable…

This book was very lovely and as a student of the bible myself I enjoyed the King James Version quotes hear and there. Although, my favorite version is The New World translation, which is said by biblical scholars, to be the most accurate translation of the original writings. Which is available in whole and part in over 2,000 languages and is available for download at JW.org, at no cost.
