Years ago, the day before Ellie moved from Georgia to California, she and her best friend, Nolan, sat beneath the Spanish moss of an ancient oak tree where they wrote letters to each other, and sealed them in a rusty old metal box. The plan was to return 11 years later and read them. But now, as that date arrives, much has changed. Ellie, bereft of the faith she grew up with, is a single mom living in a tired apartment trying to make ends meet. Sometimes she watches television to catch a glimpse of her old friend - Nolan, now an NBA star, whose terrible personal tragedies fueled his faith and athletic drive in equal measure.

Publisher's summary
New York Times best-selling author Francine Rivers returns to the California frontier in this sweeping, romantic tale of a displaced New England suffragette, a former Union soldier disinherited by his Southern family, and the town they join forces to save.
1875. When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, falling in love is the farthest thing from her mind. Banished from Boston by her wealthy stepfather, she has come to claim an inheritance from the uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street overflowing with brothels and saloons, and a seemingly worthless mine. Moved by the oppression of the local miners and their families, Kathryn decides to relaunch her uncle’s newspaper - and then finds herself in the middle of a maelstrom, pitted against Calvada’s most powerful men. But Kathryn intends to continue to say - and publish - whatever she pleases, especially when she knows she’s right.
Matthias Beck, owner of a local saloon and hotel, has a special interest in the new lady in town. He instantly recognizes C. T. Walsh’s same tenacity in the beautiful and outspoken redhead - and knows all too well how dangerous that family trait can be. While Kathryn may be right about Calvada’s problems, her righteousness could also get her killed. But when the handsome hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the issues as the opinionated Miss Walsh, Matthias’s restless search for purpose becomes all about answering the call of his heart. Everyone may be looking to strike it rich in this lawless boomtown, but it’s a love more precious than gold that will ultimately save them all.

Ok story, not the novel of faith expected
I have loved Francine Rivers because through a story, she tells a story of faith. I find general Romance novels a waste of time, but hers I will go back to because my faith is challenged, encouraged, and usually the dialog is scripture that her characters have anchored to. Although this was a good story, I waited for this element. The reason I listen to Francine Rivers. It was 99% absent. I'm returning it it was a waste of time. And I'm so incredibly sad to even have to say that. I have loved Francine Rivers and do not even know who this author is.
The story was about a dynamic woman who is sent out west during the gold rush era. She is closed off to all men determined to prove women can do anything a man can do. The very beginning of the women's rights when it was about their right to vote. And that was the focus . This woman could do anything a man could do. Nothing really about faith. oh, She goes to church. There was a few mentions of God. Nothing deeper than our sometimes casual prayer before dinner. And, but of course it is a Romance novel... so as not to spoil the shallow ending, I shall say nothing.

Not what I was hoping for
I thought this would be like Francines Christian books but it was more of a male bashing women’s lib book. More on highlighting how men are drunk, immature and upper handed. Seems more like a book written by a bitter feminist than a Christian writer.

a huge miss for me.
I love reading Francine Rivers stories. I become encouraged and often by the end of the booked my own faith is uplifted. but I feel like this was more romance with a sprinkle of God. but even the romance was a miss for me. as a Christian the main character was anything but. maybe that's why I had a hard time finishing the book. the Main character was on a male batshing rampage through the whole book except for the last chapter which got annoying. we get it you hate men.... just, not worth the read IMO.

I have read almost everything Francine has written and have enjoyed every book. This one was no different. The narrator is a bit slow so I recommend increasing the speed. I started out at 2.0 speed and increased to 2.5. If you are a fan of Francine's work, read this one. It's worth it.

Unlikeable characters
I generally love Ms Rivers stories. Her characters and plot lines are usually compelling. This story however is a bundle of frustrations and unlikeable characters. I just can’t seem to get behind Mr Beck and Katherine. He is unlikeable and high handed and a completely unattractive character. Katherine is predictable and a generally dull character. Having a whole book about political angst, injustice and feminism has not been a welcome escape for this reader.

not what I expected from one of my favorite author
Regardless of this being a true story, I didn't like this one. I love Francine rivers but this one was not something I expected from her. I love her for her faith filled stories. This one was sorely lacking that. God was obviously not guiding the characters in the story. There was no mention of God's guidance anywhere. I'm very disappointed.

Loved it!!!!!
I have been reading Francine River's books for a long time, but knowing this was a true story, makes this one really special. While waiting for my first grandchild, I read Voice In The Wind to my daughter and my Hadassah just turned 20, has always loved to read and write stories, and now works in the small library at a Christian radio station. I think I'll have to buy this book for her. I listened to it on Audible.

Disappointing
Was unable to get past 4 hours of this book. Story line is quite predictable. Was mostly disappointed by how badly the main male character behaves yet that somehow leads to a romance. Refusing to leave a lady's house after being asked is harassment. Holding her on your laps after she falls on you in the train then telling her she's better off staying there is sexual harassment. None of this should be a prelude to romance. Francine Rivers can surely do better than this.

Loved it!
Love Francine Rivers books, her storylines draw you in and you become quite attached to the characters. The narration was good in this book. Wish I could listen to it for the first time again.

Should be a movie
Loved the story. I could I imagine everything - it should be a movie.
Had an issue with the sound - could sometimes hear a creaky tape recorder sound in the background, but didn’t really distract from listening to it.

My Kind of Lady
I listened to this on a long road trip and found myself truly enjoying it, to the very end, often laughing out loud to myself. Grateful for this story. I immediately listened to it again when I reached the end.

Such a great book!!
Francine Rivers wrote an amazing tale, Kate Forbes presented it really well! By voicing the characters it really brought the story to life!

Such a lovely book!
Francine Rivers didn’t disappoint. The storyline was captivating and simply lovely. I love realistic and good endings especially in the world we are currently find ourselves in. It is good to be taken away from everyday life to the early days. Highly recommended.

loved it
This is the first audiobook I have listened to, but Francine Rivers is a long time favourite author of mine and this book has not left me wanting.
It is an amazing story and I couldn't stop listening 🎧
The reading was well done too, it was a real person, which was great and she had that southern drawl down ☺️
The only issue I noticed was that every now and then the playing would just suddenly skip a few seconds for no reason and even if you went back it didn't fix it up.

Appreciating mostly that I did not have to fear Blasphemy and inappropriate language!

Great story
I loved listening to this story. In fact, I’ve just finished listening for the second time. Though it is a classic love story with a strong willed heroine and an equally capable and challenging opponent, I thoroughly enjoyed their growing respect for each other based on trust, moral values and spiritual guidelines. I enjoyed the humour and historical challenges of the time.

Great Performance, a cliche storyline
Thought it was a bit cheesy & predictable in parts. The female Character was written with some great feminist and feminine traits, but it felt inconsistent with the way she interacted with male characters in the story. I was frustrated that she married a man who consistently tried to intimidate her, even if he did turn out to be a good guy in the end, it seemed to just be too cliche of a story line.
I really had to force myself to finish it. The book did not engage me as others by Francine Rivers had.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. I enjoyed the light hearted, comical elements of the book, interwoven with surprising twists and an interesting plot. A great story and enjoyable read. Would recommend.

Story
A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want - money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman's past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn't know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist - an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison.
