Publisher's Summary

Newlyweds Alice and Jake are a picture-perfect couple. Alice, once a singer in a well-known rock band, is now a successful lawyer. Jake is a partner in an up-and-coming psychology practice. Their life together holds endless possibilities. After receiving an enticing wedding gift from one of Alice's prominent clients, they decide to join an exclusive and mysterious group known only as the Pact.

The goal of the Pact seems simple: to keep marriages happy and intact. And most of its rules make sense: Always answer the phone when your spouse calls. Exchange thoughtful gifts monthly. Plan a trip together once per quarter. Never mention the Pact to anyone. Alice and Jake are initially seduced by the glamorous parties, the sense of community, their widening social circle of like-minded couples. And then one of them breaks the rules. The young lovers are about to discover that for adherents to the Pact, membership, like marriage, is for life. And the Pact will go to any lengths to enforce that rule. For Jake and Alice, the marriage of their dreams is about to become their worst nightmare.

This was an interesting book!

This had a pretty unique plot - a newly married couple gets invited to become part of an exclusive club, designed to help keep couples married for life. The premise was really creative, and the author did a terrific job of building up the conflict. What's interesting about this book is just like any other cult or abusive relationship -- in passing conversation, you think, "How could they possibly get caught up in that?" But it's the frog slowly boiling in water scenario, and the author really knocked it out of the park with the build-up. The character development was outstanding, and the narrator was superb. I'm not sure I liked the ending, though. Not going to give it away here to spoil it, but all in all it was a pretty fun listen. I barely put it down... highly recommend for anyone who enjoys suspenseful drama.

Kept me up all night

Thought the book had an interesting storyline. I really enjoyed the fictional concept but could imagine how a good idea can evolve into something frightening due to greed and overblown egos.

The Pact = Scientology

If you substitute the word Pact for The Church, you'd have yourself a book about Scientology.

From the Pact's leadership, surveillance of members, prison camp, and torture, it's a pretty good description of what real life is like in The Church of Scientology as described by former members -- many of whom have written books themselves.

The narrator's attempt at a woman's voice was excruciating. I kept thinking of Mr. Bill every time Alice would speak (Oh nooooooooo...!). Not only was her voice annoying, but the character itself was very boring. And the whole rocker turned attorney bit was just lame.

All in all, I found the book pretty cheesy and not worth my time or money.

Loved it

Great concept, excellent execution. As I was reading it, I kept thinking it would make a great movie. I hope they do the book justice.

Excellent!

I couldn't stop listening. Good writing kept me wanting to know what would happen next. Only bogged down a few times and got a little wordy in places. Even had some good advice mixed in. Highly recommended!

Didn't want it to end!

Not your usual suspense subject matter. Fast-paced, intricate and fascinating. Your mind will thank you.

Fabulous-Couldn't put it down!

Loved this book! Kept you interested and I lost a lot of sleep listening to it. Great premise, make your marriage the most important thing in your life, but not so easy to do in actuality.

Great Idea - Awful Story

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It wasn't time well spent - I kept waiting for the big pay off and it never happened.

Has The Marriage Pact turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, again, it was a great idea for a story, but it fell short - really short.

What does Tom Taylorson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He did a good job.

Could you see The Marriage Pact being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I could see the idea of the story made into a movie or TV series, but a lot would have to be reworked.

Any additional comments?

Don't buy it. It wasn't terrible, but it was frustrating that it could have been so good and it never was.

I liked a lot of it....

Can't say I loved it but it was good. Suspensful, and interesting. Anticlimactic ending though.

Totally unbelievable yarn that was never really a story. Not sure what point the author was trying to make about marriage. Absolute tosh

Truely gripping story.

I was gripped by this story - sucked in by some good ideas of how to keep your marriage healthy and then horrified at how quickly this can be taken to another level.

Well written and narrated.

This novel started well but went downhill around the middle. The ending was disappointing. I felt it could have concluded better.

Interesting but not a book for everyone/me.

This book started off gripping and interesting and I got invested in the characters and the idea. It's written well and the Narator is good but the plot quickly gets uncomfortable and then deeply disturbing. I feel the need to finish it so I can hopefully get to a satisfying ending/closure but I am currently finding it very distressing to listen too. I won't give away too many details but if you find humiliation/degradation and abuse difficult to hear about then avoid this book. Reminds me of the "stanford prison experiment" or the Nazis. Not a book for me. As a movie It would be psychological thriller and an 18Rating.
