Publisher's Summary

Arabella Lane is found dead in the Thames on a frosty winter’s morning after the office Christmas party. No one is sure whether she jumped or was pushed. The one person who may know the truth is the office temp, Eleanor.

Having traveled to London to escape the repercussions of her traumatic childhood in Australia, tragedy seems to follow Eleanor wherever she goes. To her horror, she has no memory of the crucial hours leading up to Arabella’s death - memory that will either incriminate or absolve her.

Caught in a crossfire of accusations, Eleanor fears she can’t even trust herself, let alone the people around her. And soon, she’ll find herself in a race against time to uncover what happened that night - and discover just how deadly some secrets can be.

Skippable

I love a good mystery/thriller with an unreliable woman at the center. These are my brain candy. The best (Lisa Jewell, Ruth Ware) make me stay up all night reading/listening and longing for more. Some of the others...still have me sleep deprived due to my need to find out what happens but make me go "okay, I know I can probably skip this author in the future." This is in that latter category. I listened compulsively but all the while scoffed at the unrealistic characters and super suspect police behavior (no fan of the cops but I don't think they're this incompetent, or at least not incompetent in this way). The final straw for me was the MacGuffin-esque ring that shows up in the first chapter and then keeps appearing and disappearing and ultimately doesn't mean anything. Yes this kept me listening but there's no shortage of brain candy out there so I'll pick a different author while I wait for the next Ruth Ware.

Please Don’t Read the Negative Reviews!

You have to listen to the entire book to really appreciate all the layers of the book. Towards the middle I wondered where was the author going with this and did I want to invest more time figuring it out.

I looked at the reviews and was almost persuaded to not move ahead with it. I saw one reviewer say the importance of the ring was never uncovered. It most definitely was. Another one thought the flashbacks were confusing. I would suggest maybe a picture book would be a better fit for them next time.

The book is about the complexities of family life and the author did an outstanding job with it. One of my favorite of all times books.

Confusing

I thought this book would have been something good to listen to but it wasn’t. This was the longest book to stretch out a death scene. I would have to go back and reply it because I was getting lost in the story.

Now I must admit it didn’t keep me entertained at all so I would find myself drifting off and then having to push rewind.

Wish it would have been better for me

Totally enjoyable

This was a well-narrated book, with a strong plot and brisk pace. I enjoyed the characters and their many traits, foibles and chicanery. The protagonist was likeable, I was rooting for her all the way. Highly recommend.

Great Story

I love it when a mystery can also be a LIFE LESSON...this really covers all bases.. the characters the growing pain of adolescents, how decisions parents make affect us for a lifetime and about forgiveness AND Accountability!! its got it all. I literally couldn't put it down and kept me guessing. Hopefully this author has more great stories...I'll be checking for sure!

Great book - Excellent closing message

The story and narration was excellent and worth a listen. No spoilers. The final words of advice at the end of the book touched home so I will take the advice to find stories that speak to my heart.

Kept my interest throughout

So many twists and turns wondering what comes next and what really happened. Highlights impact of real life actions. Narration was smooth and easy to listen to.

so much potential!

a decent storyline, but not the best written. The story has great bones, but there are flashbacks that are very difficult to keep up with. Sometimes, they're prompted and other times they're not. I found myself having to literally say out loud, "oh it's a flashback" after listening for a minute or two. wondering what is going on. The ending was slightly predictable, but decent. This book could have easily been four or five stars with the help of a good editor.
