Publisher's Summary

Hard live. Hard Lessons. It's murder on the streets. When a prostitute's body is found lifeless, mutilated and brutally raped, DCI Annie Carr has never seen anything like it and never wants to again. Kate Burrows, retired DCI now consultant, has plenty of experience when it comes to murder - after all she caught the Grantley Ripper and broke the biggest pedophile ring in the South East. She is determined to help put the killer behind bars.

But whoever it is won't be easily caught. And when another girl's body is found, even more horrifically disfigured than the last, it's clear the killer is just warming up... In a ruthless world where everyone's out for themselves, Annie and Kate must dig deep if they hope to catch a callous serial killer who knows no limits and makes no mistakes. For some, prostitution is seriously big business. But how many people will pay the ultimate price? Utterly compelling, Hard Girls is a gripping and disturbing thriller that will have you hooked until the very last page.

I found it too long .....

I like Martina Cole books, but this one was so drawn out, I began to get bored with it, I was glad I stuck with it but I guessed who the culprit was long before the end of the book ...The use of bad language was frequent & often uneccessary (I am no prude, but this was over the top). This however, has not put me off buying more Martina Cole.....

First and last Martina Cole for me

I agree with all previous reviews that state this is too long. Inherently not a bad story but, there is so much repetition. There is very little detective work in it (I'm aware that's one of the stories main themes) but the lead character is touted as being an Ace detective only by referencing previous cases. There is graphic violence and crude bad language throughout and I think the narration is appropriate for the genre and characters. But it's sooo long and quite a lot of repetition could have been left out. There is repeated arguments and feelings, which sound like a 'copy and paste from previous chapters. Also I knew the killer 3hours before the end and the last three hours was painful. Shame really as I think inherently a story with strong potential.

The conclusion was hurried for me. Would have liked less character arguments and feelings, more detective work and more explanations

I would suggest pay more for an Abridged version if available.

Good follow up

What made the experience of listening to Hard Girls the most enjoyable?

Primarily the narator - she is excellent and enhances the storyline which to be fair I felt was a little weaker than The Ladykiller which it follows.

Have you listened to any of Annie Aldington’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have lkistened to a number of her performances and she is adept in giving each charactor their own individuality and vocal identity.

Any additional comments?

Another one not for those offended by bad language, but there again it is in context

Predictable

Knew who it was less than half way through. Story repetitive. Defo not one of Coles best.

May be a good tale............But oh what a

Bland, boring and very dull narrator, maybe the book would be quite interesting but I could not even finish listening. I do wonder why Martina Cole seems to use Annie Aldington on so many of her books, I am very sure there are much better voice actors, someone who could at least change the tone in their voice would be a good start.
