Story
The Bailey brothers are gangsters determined to make their mark in the world. Peter and Daniel are chalk and cheese in many ways - Peter's calm exterior belies his ruthless nature, while Daniel's penchant for spectacular violence is legendary - but together they are unstoppable. From the late 70s they rule London's East End, and when their sons join the business, it seems that no one can touch the powerful Baileys. Although it's never easy at the top; there is always someone waiting to take you down....

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Publisher's summary
The Family by Sunday Times number one best seller Martina Cole gets right to the core of family life and the dangerous line between love and hate.
The 'undisputed queen of crime writing' (Guardian), Martina's unique, powerful storytelling will appeal to fans of Karin Slaughter and Patricia Cornwell.
Family is everything for the Murphy clan. Philip runs his business empire with the help of his brother, and dotes on his two sons who will, one day, take over.
His wife Christine is his perfect match. She'd always dreamed of a big happy family and, when she married into the Murphys, she thought she'd found one. But when that illusion is shattered, she's already in too deep.
The Murphys are dangerous and Christine can't unsee the horrors she has now been forced to open her eyes to. But nor can she escape them.

If you could sum up The Family in three words, what would they be?
I have read all of Martina Cole's book and enjoy them immensely, but this story is some what predictable , but still a good read not one of her best though
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
not this time
Have you listened to any of Annie Aldington’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
yes, excellent reader
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
intriguing story of life, family and crime
Any additional comments?
no, Martina Cole is an excellent crime thriller writer

Well worth a listen
As with Martina Cole novels the book is a great audiobook to listen to however the ending although good is a bit hurried for all the groundwork that goes before even saying that its a great listen. Martina creates characters you love or hate in only a way that she can.

blood's thicker than water so says the family
Martina Cole writes like a soap opera screen writer. She's what you'd call a tube station writer. All the chapters are short which means there's time to read them between tube stops. However the story is good. irf you like medium paced novels with violence and introspection then you'll like this one. I liked bits of it but for me there was too much introspection which took the pace off it too often and the nmarator might have done a bertter job. I'd say it was an average book but well written with plenty of attention to detail.

Bit Disappointing
What did you like best about The Family? What did you like least?
Was generally a good story, but the overuse of swear words was unneccesary, especially when the narrator sounded like my dear sweet old aunt using bad language. Overall think this book would have been better narrated by a man, but I would certainly listen to another book by the narrator, who did an excellent job.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Nothing really was a bit predictable
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
As above, think this would have been a book better read by a man due to the amount of swearing throughout
Could you see The Family being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
No, bit old hat and been done many times before
Any additional comments?
Won't be reading another Martina Cole

Story
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.
