Publisher's summary

A violent rapist is attacking women, leaving them for dead on south London streets. When young policewoman Maeve Kerrigan responds to a domestic disturbance, she's horrified to stumble across the latest victim. But as a new recruit - and a female to boot - she'll have to face down not only her own nerves but rampant sexism from her colleagues if she wants to be taken seriously enough to even assist on the case.

International best seller Jane Casey takes Maeve back to her early days as a rookie police woman in Left for Dead - a brilliant novella sure to delight series fans and new listeners alike.

Waste of time & $

I've listened to all the Mauve Kerrigan books which I enjoyed. I picked this up because it was half price. Basically, it was a waste of time. Not sure why the author bothered.

Save your time and credits

The story is latter day Nancy Drew with some high school petting thrown in. The narrator reminded me of Bette Davis with her clipped words and what is apparently her idea of a posh British accent. The the most egregious transgression occurred when she was speaking dialogue for a visiting higher echelon police officer with celebrity status and rather dashing physical attributes. She made him sound like an octagenarian pensioner with longstanding COPD. Weak novel, weak narrator.

Last resort

Dull story, narrative was awful, no thrills, no suspense at all.
For a short read, it fell short of any genres

Dreadful narration made it hard to finish

I bought this for a few dollars, then I realized, much to my dismay, it was narrated by Sarah Coomes. Eeeeek! Her voice is annoying and clipped. I’ve had the misfortune of listening to her before. I wasn’t expecting any improvement; I was right. Actually, Coomes narration is worse than what I remember if that is possible. But the story looked good and it was short book, so I decided to gave it a chance by new author to me, Jane Casey. It was most likely a suspenseful murder mystery but it was painful listening to Coomes. I tried to finish, but all I heard was “blah-blah-blah.”

Great quick listen

Perfect listen for a short road trip or a morning's chores - highly recommended for both the story and narration!

Enjoyable Introduction to an Interesting Character

I knew shortly after starting this book that I was going to want to read and hear more from this author. Well written. Just the right blend of setting and dialogue. Just enough description about settings and people to paint the appropriate picture for readers. I rarely purchase books from authors on first reads until after I have completed the book, but I did purchase the first novel in this series and will read that before starting other purchases.

The narration was very good as well. Bonus points.

It was short

It was short and I didn’t feel like there was much of a big storyline. The narrator did great. Just wish the book had more detail and was longer. It would’ve been awesome if they went further into her career.
